(17,322 characters)All right, guys. I'm at Renville Sales in Renville, Minnesota. And we are picking up our next trailer that we're going to be giving away. And that's a Southland trailer. And there's a few things that Southland does that's absolutely unique in the trailer industry. And we're going to cover those in today's video. But make sure you stick around before you buy your next trailer because some of the stuff that these guys do is unlike what anything any other trailer company I've ever seen does. So, let's get into today's video. Hey, guys. I'm in Renville with Shane. Shane, do you own Renville Trailer Sales? >> I do. Myself and my family. Yes. >> In where? >> Renville, Minnesota. >> All right. So, if you guys are in that neck of the woods, these are great folks. come out and check them out. They sell a number of different trailers, but today we're going to be covering this Southland trailer in four major categories. And what Southland does different paint, they do different than any other trailer manufacturer out there. The structure of the trailer, how they actually build these trailers, which is completely different from what anybody else is doing out there. the trailer that you finally get in your hands, how that's built, I'm referring to >> some of the wiring, which is some of the best of the best processes that are out there. And then the manufacturing process itself, not just the end product that you guys are going to have in your hands, >> but actually how these trailers are actually built. I was the first content creator that ever got to go out there and go behind the scenes and see it firsthand and witness it eye to eye and it's absolutely mindblowing. But now this trailer is one of the next trailers that we're buying for the giveaway that we've got coming up. But I want to cover all of these points for you guys because if you don't happen to be lucky enough to win one, you at least have the information to know whether you want to go out and buy one. And let's start with the structure, how they actually build this chain. >> Yeah. So, they're super high on engineering. And Stan, you probably saw that when you went through their factory. They're going to start up front with a tube frame, but then what's really unique is this engineered sill design. They've got engineered beams or structure running the long way. And that is different than what you'll see on most trailers. Most are just going to have a subframe underneath the box and then crossmembers running the crossways on the box or like I said, these are going to have the engineered cell beams running the long ways on the trailer and then your hoist is connected directly to that. So like you saw when you're up in Canada, very similar to how they were done on a dump truck. Okay? Standard dump truck is exactly the same way as this. Not crossmembers on the floor. >> Well, they build on. So they they manufacture those for those. And personal experience, I own a number of dump trailers. I mean, I own actually a ton of them. And when I look at one of my other trailers, which has the cross beam design, and my Southland trailer, which I have two main dump trailers that we run pretty hardcore over all the other ones, Timmy, we have the two trailers we normally run for everything, right? >> Yep. >> Yeah. And Southland is one that we grab and go all the time, and then there's another one that we grab and go all the time. And when I look at the floor of the Southland trailer in comparison to the other trailer, there's a night and day difference. The other trailer that has the crossmembers underneath it, that trailer looks like a washboard. >> In between those crossmembers, the floor is going like that and it's dinged and dented. And what happens is now our loads when we have wet, loose, sloppy material, we go up to dump it. We're now getting that load stuck. So, not only is this floor design different because you don't see dump trucks have that crossmember design, dump trucks have this design. Our our freight liner has this design. End dumps have this design. This is the This is the design that truck companies use and it does two things. It strengthens the truck bed, but it also lightens the load. >> Yes. Yeah. Yeah. So, this trailer has a a GVWR of 15,400 lb and an empty weight of 3120 lb. So, that's giving you over 12,000 lb of net payload. And that's super important, right? That's what you're getting paid to haul is the payload, not just the empty weight of the trailer. >> It has one of the highest weight uh lowest weight to capacity ratios in the industry. >> Yes. Yeah. more comparable dump trailers we'll see with like 8 in I-beam dumps, 14 ft, 14K, those are all going to weigh around 4,000 lb. So you'll see this is significantly lighter. We're talking about more than 20% lighter. We're looking at like a 25% difference in weight, but that's not compromising in strength. And that's not just coming in theory. That's coming from us who have used this trailer over and over again. And if our trailer was washboarding, we wouldn't be coming out to be picking up another one and promoting the name of this company. I wouldn't do it. >> And you saw all the engineering when you went through the factory, didn't you? They're super high in engineering. And it's not just throwing steel at the trailer. The Southland Trailer Company's engineering is, this is not to be braggadocious, the only company in the world that had engineering to the level of Southland Trailers is Volvo out of Shippenbergs, Pennsylvania, and they will not allow you to film. So, I got to go behind the scenes and see how that Volvo makes their loaders. And their manufacturing process is like being in a freaking hospital. And Southland's trailer process is as almost comparable to Volvo's manufacturing process. And here's an interesting story. One of the guys from Southland Trailers comes up to me, goes, "Hey, Stan." I'm like, "Yeah." He goes, "I saved 8 square feet in this manufacturing facility." I'm like, "What does that mean?" And in my head, I'm drawing out what 8 square ft looks like. I'm like, "Oh, what's the big deal? Who cares about that?" He says that 8 square ft allowed me to manufacture one more trailer per day. They are so hyperefficient. They have everything so stateofthe-art and dialed in that it it feels like you're witnessing something out of Japan itself. And and I was telling Shane off camera, let's walk this way and take a look at some stuff. I was telling Shane off camera, it's not like they're forcing their guys or pushing their guys to work harder. I watch this manufacturing facility and I've actually got it on video in one of my old videos for Southland where they bring a trailer in and the guys run up like NASCAR drivers and they run up and they're the trailer lifts up, rotates over, the guys are and when they're they back off, the music's cranking and the guys are dancing. They're they're just moving and grooving and the next trailer comes in and they jump in and they're like and I'm just like what am I witnessing? I mean, and this is up in Alberta, Canada, out in the boonies of nowhere. How did they get these people that are are this hyperefficient and this tuned into their job? >> Yeah. What did you see with the paint process when you were through there? >> The paint process is very similar. It's the same. Not I can't say it's very similar. It is the same as on Ford, Chevy, GM, Ram pickup trucks. It's the same liquid paint process that they have. And when they paint something, it's not just powder coated on cuz this is not a paint process. This is a liquid paint as far as what you know, and you may know more about this than I do. But then they don't just paint it and walk away from it. They actually have a meter where they go through and they can tell you how thick every point on your trailer is anywhere in the process. >> High quality control, right? >> They go through and they're measuring every single part of the trailer to make sure that the paint is done the way that they want it to be done. Now, some people are like, "Oh, my Southland trailer is paint. I hate the paint and blah blah blah blah blah." Well, for one, it's the same as the what's on the vehicles. It's the same standards that's are on the vehicles, but you're taking a trailer and intentionally dumping rocks and gravel on it. >> Do you take your pickup truck and drop rocks and gravel on your pickup truck over and over and over again all day in day in and day out? >> No way. >> No, you don't. And so, what do you expect when you're putting something like that into a different process? >> Yeah. I I read that on a Facebook forum one time, too. People were complaining about the the paint on their dump trailer floor and and then somebody said, "Well, how do I keep my dump trailer floor from rusting?" They said, "Put a load of sand in it and use it once in a while." >> Or or don't use it at all. >> Yeah. >> It's just what's going to happen, >> right? Um now, as we look at the tubular frame underneath here, walk me through what we're going to see under here, will you Shane? >> Yeah. So, you know, this is kind of part of it, too. With that tube frame, they can enclose all their wiring inside there, too. So, that's giving us some strength, but it's also giving you protection for that wiring. We've already covered that engineered sill design. Um, and then this trailer, too, just comes really well loaded with equipment. Everything you see on here is standard. We're going to see around the other side there's a spare tire and a mount. Up in the front, we've got 110 volt charger for the battery. It comes with a solar charger. >> Let's walk. Let's look inside here. So, as as you're talking, let's play. I want these guys to see what they're getting, if this is the right trailer for them or not. >> For sure. So inside we do have some protection over that pump and battery. Um so just small lid that just comes off the top here. Deep cycle battery and pump inside there. >> And this is all standard equipment. >> This is all standard equipment. Everything you see is standard. There is 110 volt charger over on the other side. So you've got a battery tender maintainer built right into the toolbox. >> Solar charger on the top of the lid there. What do you know about the cylinders that they put on these? >> Yeah, they run a nice 7 ton champion hoist. So, scissor hoist. And they do run a 7 ton hoist. >> Now, does this trailer have their new gate system? >> Not yet. No. >> Okay. Is that new gate system? So, this trailer does not have the new gate system, but they do have a new gate system out there >> coming up. We just saw it at the show back in September. >> When is that coming out? >> It is available on 2026 models rolling out soon. I just got an email on it the other day. Okay. >> So, we will see those, you know, in some of the next loads. >> And that's a that's a three-way gate system. >> Yeah. And we can get you some more information on that, too. >> Perfect. Okay. >> In the back, you've got some rear support stands that just drop down. So, if you are loading equipment, those will drop out of there. Got rear store ramps. Slides straight out of the back. Single latch makes it easy to open and operate the dump doors. They've got an automatic lock for your door hold back. Comes standard with four D-rings in the bed. Look at these wide fur boards on the top, too. That's Canadian lumber. So, that operates as a slam latch. Also, I didn't have to touch the latch when we close the doors. >> Mhm. >> Slam it shut. And that wedge just rotates the pin down into the holder. >> And that is not to be brushed over. >> Yeah. I've got a dump trailer where every single load I dump, I have to find a stick or pull a screwdriver out of the door. Shane's shaking his head because he knows exactly what I'm talking about because it has a ring where one slides into the other. And you know what that does? >> That holds all the dirt that I just dumped out. So every single time I'm just like, "Oh my god, it's just and it's an okay trailer." but there's design components of it that could be done better. And when you invest that kind of money into a piece of equipment, you don't want to think, "Oh, this could be done better." You want something, you want to make that decision where you you feel like you've made the best decision and gotten the most value out of your money that you possibly can. >> When you think about when you're using it daily like that, how many times that pain point comes up? >> Yep. Now, some people will say, "Well, you know, I wish we had a um a front hoist." >> Yeah. and that's fine, but I've had my front hoist on my dump trailers give me problems as much as any other hoist system out there. These guys have a scissor hoist, >> but they have a heavier duty scissor hoist. So, they actually use a heavier duty scissor hoist, the actual cylinder itself to give more lifting power versus the front loads that you typically will see. >> 7 ton on a 14,000lb trailer. So, you know that hoist is overkill and it's going to lift anything you put in there. Well, they talk about the stability of that scissor hoist. Also, I mean, you can see how that thing was mounted. Mounted well back into the frame on those engineered sills. Get a nice wide stance on that hoist. This is not to be downplayed. The size of the hoist itself is not to be down downplayed. There's no compromising on that. Now you do have options though with Southland. So this is Pora their bread and butter type of a trailer. So what we've got here there's nothing fancy about this trailer. This is your standard operating equipment. >> But you can go onward and upward from here on what the way you have this configured and what the way this trailer comes. >> Yep. More models and options. And I think you got the SL 714 16K HD. Okay. >> So on yours you're going to have the hydraulic jack, >> right? They do a little bit heavier all the way around. They go to a nine ton hoist. They would go to 8,000lb axles. They do have a 316 floor option and then a little bit heavier on the sidewalls also. >> Right. >> So, that'll be the model that you guys have got. >> So, if you want and ours is custom painted. >> Yes. >> And that's something that Southland can do as well. >> Absolutely. >> If you guys want to have your trailer to match your rig, Southland can accomplish that for you. >> Now, I don't know what it would take to personally get that done. Yep. Yeah, we can work through that here. We get truckloads of trailers from Southland all the time and can work those into them. >> So, I do know that if Southland has the paint code >> to your truck, you give them the paint code and you say, "I want my trailer this color, it's coming." And the reason they can do that, >> yeah, that's just all liquid PPG paint >> is because they do the same process as the as the truck companies do it. So, it's the same thing. Yep. It's the same process as on the vehicle, so you can make them blend right in. >> Yep. Match your fleet. >> Yeah. >> Yep. >> Yeah. For sure. >> Awesome. Is there anything else, Shane? >> Oh, I think that covers a lot of it. >> Come to Renville and buy one of my trailers. Is that what you were going to say? >> Absolutely. >> Yeah. All right. Hey, I hope you guys enjoyed going along for the ride. I am a firm believer in Southland Trailers. I've seen behind the scenes their manufacturing process. I know what their paint process is like and I know their their weight ratio to their ability to handle that. What would we call that? >> Strength to weight ratio is what they're after. >> Okay. Strength to weight ratio is one of the highest inside of the industry. Plus, after a couple years of using our Southland trailer on a day-to-day basis, doing demolition, excavation, dirt hauling, the floor of our bed has no problems with it at all. It looks It looks the same as what this looks right now. That's why we're here picking one up for one of you guys to hopefully win. We're going to stick this trailer behind a new truck that we just picked up and we're going to give this to one of you guys. So, if you don't win it, come to Renville, hook up with Shane right here and buy one from him. [laughter] or go to the Dirt Monkey shop and check it out because we'll have more information on this. You go into our shop and you pick up one of our hats, you pick up one of our t-shirts, and you can have a chance to win this trailer. So, hopefully that helps you out today, guys. Uh, check out the dirt monkeyshop.com for more information or check out these videos or head over to these guys. But that's all I've got. Anything else? >> That's it. Congratulations to the winner. God bless and go get him you guys. We'll see you on another one.
