Honey Bees: How I prepare My Bees for Winter

What happens here

Approach the hive slowly and calmly. Give a few puffs of smoke into the hive entrance to disorient and calm the guard bees. This triggers their instinct to gorge on honey, making them less likely to sting. Gently lift the outer metal cover of the hive and apply a few more puffs of smoke under it, then wait a minute or two for the smoke to take effect before fully removing it. Next, carefully lift the inner screened cover, smoking again if necessary, to expose the top of the frames. Observe the bees' activity and response to the smoke.

Goal: Approach the hive calmly, apply smoke to the entrance and under the covers to subdue the bees, then carefully remove the hive covers.
