What happens here

This video showcases a farmer feeding his flock of chickens with both commercial feed and various food scraps, such as old bread and fish. The farmer discusses the historical role of chickens as 'ultimate recyclers,' emphasizing their ability to convert otherwise discarded food items into valuable protein (eggs) for human consumption, thereby highlighting their contribution to a sustainable farm ecosystem. Please note: This video does not demonstrate any techniques for composting animal manure using a cold pile method, but rather focuses on the feeding and recycling habits of live chickens.

Chickens are the barnyard's ultimate recyclers. Chickens are omnivores. And uh I got some old bread here. And I had some fish in the refrigerator that got pushed to the back of the fridge. Here you go, kids. There you go. What is that? Weird. So, it used to be the job of a young boy. And you think about this, guys. Chicken feed hasn't been manufactured so much as it is now um commercially, but for I don't know 80, 90 years, something like that. Chicken's been around way way longer than that. Like think about back in the Civil War times. If you had two good laying hens, maybe three, you could feed a family of four, right? You'd never starve. Your chickens and your hogs would be your sustenance. Even back in like the 17,6 1500s, a a flock of chickens was for survival. You didn't eat them. You got the eggs and and you transformed garbage into good quality protein and food for your family. It used to be the job of the young boy to go out and find wild game and bring it and throw it [laughter] in the chicken coop. They'd go out and then hunt and like hunt squirrels, fish, whatever. They would drop it over in the chicken coop and that would give them the protein that the chickens need to produce the high quality eggs. turning garbage into good food.
