What happens here

This DIY project demonstrates an attempt to temporarily fix a crack in a bathtub using Flex Tape and Flex Seal spray. The process involves cleaning and sanding the cracked area, applying the Flex Tape, and then coating it with Flex Seal spray. The repair is then tested by filling the bathtub with water. The creator concludes that while the products can hold water, they are not a permanent solution for a structural issue like a failing mortar bed.

hey folks that fix-it guy here and today we're gonna be fixing some stuff I've got some flex seal tape I've got some flex seal spray and I have somebody that wants me to fix a bathtub of this stuff they've got a big crack in their bathtub it's busted out I've told them the way that they should repair it but they want to hook it up this way and you know what video purposes I'm game man let's see what this stuff can do so come along let's get to fixing [Music] [Applause] okay so you can see right down here that this little area right here is actually aware it's been patched and it feels a little different than the rest of the tub he says it's been patched a couple of times you can see that it's breaking out the UH the mortar bed below it is not good it's it's pretty squishy around a lot of places unfortunately this is a Big Mac stub these tubs are it's a fiberglass tub it's super deep and it's expensive and you can see that this tub itself is like 17 inches deep it's pretty awesome if it's gonna allow a full-sized man like me to soak in here they're pretty cool all right so back to our task at hand here you said this has already been repaired a couple of times there is no warranty on this I feel like they gave his money back and said good luck the only good way to fix this is to rip it out I mean this is a new remodel too so the only way to fix this is to rip it out and I mean you just spend on craps on the money getting all this done you do not want to rip this out okay so he left me a thing of this flex tape by flex seal you know it's good because it's as seen on tv and you wanted me to put this over the hole so to do that I'm gonna go ahead and I'm going to sand this up a little bit put a little alcohol on it get it kind of all cleaned off we'll put some of that tape on we'll let that set up and then we'll come back and he wanted me to use some of this flex seal clear on it so my friends got a few other guys living with them and so four guys sharing a bathroom is you know by these days standard is a little bit crazy so we'll put that on we'll give that some dry time and then we'll fill it up and test it it's going to be a couple day process so I've already kind of wiped it down one and we know we're going to get some kind of a bond to it right so we've got some stuff off of there now I've got a towel that's got a little bit of alcohol on it just rub that around get all or debris off of that crack open our good stuff I've never used this stuff before and I totally plan on doing a comparison video with it I bought some to do one for water leaks I just haven't used it yet but we'll get it hooked up here at some point you know time is definitely a factor you throw my job the kids into the haulage a little ice busy man I don't make this stuff easy to open that's for sure just don't really want me in it maybe this is a sign it says don't do what you're about to do right it's a little bit wonky but somebody asked you to do something you know what I just kind of say okay man I'm here to go this it's sticky it is definitely sticky just that part where it sticks on it is pretty sticky if that's anything like it it should work out pretty well but I'm just going to take this on a Wacka piece off and the old scissors here okay got a big whack there and so we have everything hooked up right there let's just cut this too many here just cut the sticky part off and now that's gonna cover up our it's gonna be able to cover up our area nice there and you cover it this way yeah yeah I think we do oh that's sticky okay so we gotta thought clear off of there oh yeah that's sticky okay oh man yeah that's some adhesive right there okay stink backside of the scissors and just kind of off there oh yeah a little alcohol take those stickiness right on out of there let's give it a little cure time and then we'll come back and we'll just spray it down okay so now that we've got this put on there we're going to get this packed right here some dry time and then we'll go ahead and we'll put some of this flex seal clear on the top of it and see if that's gonna hold for us okay so now it's been a day and we're actually going to take this flex seal spray this is the clear stuff this is what the homeowner wanted me to put over the patch after I did this and hopefully this gets them back up and running let's just give it a good mix [Music] okay I don't really know how much to go with this stuff but interestingly enough that's what the patch looks like it's spray-painted over if you don't have the light right on it you can kind of hardly tell it looks like it's got a pea color intent to it I don't know we're going to go ahead and we're going to fill up the bathtub and we're just gonna give it a check let it set for a little while see what it does [Music] okay so now we have the tub filled up and we are going to check and see if we get some kind of movement out of it on our patch you can tell that like there's like a lump of concrete or something sticking through here I don't really know if that's gonna going to work I mean I think this patch is going to hold for a while I don't know in the end if this is kind of really work for us should be a good temporary patch for a little bit okay so we're back and the water hasn't really gone down at all it's a little bit dirty but it looks like everything is holding so this is gonna be a good little temporary patch until we can figure something else out okay folks that was our flex seal fix we got some flex tape we got some spray style flex seal and that's what the homeowner want so that's what the homeowner got this is a temporary solution to a very permanent problem man like the mortar bed on that that tub is not done correctly it was seriously done wonky and I feel like there's a big chunk of concrete or rock in the bottom of it that just ended up protruding through so really the best way to fix this is gonna be to rip the tub out I told him that he doesn't want to go that route so maybe we're gonna try to find another repair maybe we'll cut open a wall see if we can get down in there figure out something else but to get this tub up and running for the other guys in this place like this was just as quick fix he wanted me to do it for some reason and you know I wanted to do it because I wanted to shoot a video on it it's not too often you get to feel like you're in an infomercial at midnight right hey folks that things a guy here flexy Alexei Alexei Oh get it yeah all right I really hope this video helps in some one day maybe let you know like this
