What happens here

Before completing the stone pillar and while the wooden post is still exposed, securely attach temporary wooden supports (e.g., small pieces of 2x4 lumber) to the sides of the post. These supports should be positioned so that they can hold the pre-fabricated pillar cap at a height slightly above where it will ultimately rest on the finished stone pillar. This allows for ample space to build the stone courses underneath the cap without obstruction.

Goal: Create a temporary support system to hold the pillar cap above the stone work.

Tools and materials

  • 2x4 Lumber — Creating the temporary support brackets for the pillar cap
  • Drill/Driver — Attaching the 2x4 supports to the wooden post
  • Screws/Nails — Fastening the temporary supports to the wooden post
  • Wooden Pergola Post — The central element to which temporary supports are attached
