What happens here

After the first coat has dried, the DIYer uses an orbital sander with a sanding sponge (likely a fine-grit one) and a vacuum attachment to lightly sand the tabletop. This step is vital for smoothing out any imperfections, removing dust nibs, and creating a perfect surface for subsequent coats, ensuring a buttery smooth finish.
