Fighting a Landslide - Heavy Equipment against Natural Disaster
What happens here
Despite the lack of a full drainage system, the project proceeds with the geogrid layering. The excavator places a layer of geogrid, then backfills it with soil, and a Bobcat T300 skid steer with a compactor attachment is used to compact the soil. The layering is adjusted to one-foot increments (instead of the original two-foot plan) to compensate for the wet conditions and provide additional reinforcement. This process is repeated, building up the slope layer by layer with compacted soil and geogrid, extending into the undisturbed hillside.
Goal: Implement the geogrid layering and compact the soil to rebuild a stable slope.
Tools and materials
- Bobcat T300 — Compacting layers of soil
- Excavator Kobelco SK160 LC — Placing geogrid and backfilling with soil
- Geogrid — Reinforcing soil layers to increase tensile strength and prevent shear failure
- Backfill Soil N/A — Rebuilding the slope in layers over the geogrid
