Stoney Ridge Farmer

What happens here

This video provides a tour of Stoney Ridge Farm, showcasing various farm areas like the garden plot, chicken coop, beehives, orchard, equipment yard (including tractors, mowers, and a manure spreader), hay yard, cattle pasture, and areas recently cleared for expansion. The farmer discusses past projects, future plans for infrastructure development like a larger shop and permanent water systems, and highlights the process of building soil fertility using methods like unrolling hay for cattle to trample and incorporating chicken manure into the garden. While mentioning manure application as a future task, the video primarily focuses on presenting the farm's layout and ongoing development.

hey there folks this is josh stoney ridge farmer welcome back to another beautiful day here on the stoney ridge farm and it's not going to be beautiful for very long we have a huge ice storm coming in today and there's not a lot really moving and shaking here on the farm so today by popular request i'm going to take you guys around the farm and give you a little bit of a tour of this place and i'm going to tell you it did not look like this when we first moved here all of this mess was grown up in brushy trees all of this all that way over there we're going to go all over the farm today we're also going to toss the drone up so you guys get a good idea and we'll start on the south side of the farm with the drone and we'll fly to the north side of the farm with the drone we're on a 150 acre piece of property i think this information could apply to you whether you lived on a quarter acre or whether you homesteaded on a five acre 10 acre or even a 200 or 500 acre place this is all good information we'll take you around the farm and have some fun all right guys welcome to the stoney ridge farm channel if this your first time here please pound that like button jump in subscribe or if you're on facebook follow us follow the journey i'd love to have you back so we're standing on a place where our garden plot is and our garden plot has a little bit of coverage on it right now our cover crop is dead but the land's not exposed and we'll be planting our garden right here in this area there's a lot to be learned right here okay our chickens are right beside our garden in the fall we fence in our garden with premiere 1 fencing and let the chickens eat everything down okay they eat all of the veggie scraps and all the seeds and all that stuff they gobble it all up our mobile home which we moved into when we first got here cost me thirty five hundred dollars three thousand five hundred dollars and the land here in north carolina where we are the cost is around two thousand bucks an acre which is pretty cheap guys post a comment down there tell me what you think tell me what land cost around your area if you're gonna buy a hundred acres what would it cost you so as we talk about the chicken coop right there it's a great little chicken coop we've only got seven laying hens we've got 40 more hens coming these are for our own personal eggs we move our meat birds around in the pasture and there'll be links in the down there for all of our chicken videos i've got probably 30 or 40 chicken videos out there now chickens here manure garden yeah all right awesome so also our honeybees we have honeybees right here we had 13 stands of honeybees only three or four have made it through the winter but out here is where our honeybees are we have an orchard a small orchard right here and the cows have been out there and they've made a huge mess i'm not very proud of that mess but what we wanted was to roll out some hay on this area because there was just no nutrient in the soil now our honeybees are here our orchard is here if we have a honeybee swarm typically the bees will go into the trees that are in the orchard and i can capture that swarm and start a new honeybee hive pretty cool now let's go for a cruise you've seen the front area here only that little bit of field right there just right there and where the mobile home is that's the only part of this land that was cleared when we bought it six years ago that's it that's all me and my wife bought this land this was a 60-acre tract and over here is a 90-acre tract so let's go on up to the top of the hill where the tractor shed is again guys you'll understand the entire layout of all this as you look at the drone footage stick around to the end there's going to be some cool drone footage and we'll mix in some drone footage of everything that we're seeing today so you guys can get an idea of what it looks like from the sky so we're in the driveway right here house is directly behind me before we go i think we should talk a little bit about the sawmill so we've got our sawmill temporarily set up right here by the swamp donkey there's a big old pile of horse manure right here that we're going to be spreading on this field as soon as the ground will allow it it's just really really mushy out here this is my dad's old 52 farm all tractor we're going to be getting that running in a future video love love love my honda foreman atv and what we're doing right here is we have lumber out here air drying and slowly but surely i'm working my way through a big old stack of lumber you see all those logs down there lots of lumber to be milled here on the farm contact this is a honda foreman 500 2019 model awesome there's a gear shifter we're gonna go all the way into second gear so we can drive let's look at the chicken coop really quickly before we start it's a bit of a mess right now because it's that muddy time of year but a lot of thought went into this so we could access our egg boxes from the outside and the feed hangs in here via a chain so the chickens have a nice place to roost and a good little run out there and we gotta shovel that manure out here in the spring and put it out on the garden now over here on the other side you can see some future video projects going on so this is a 1950 willis jeep and over to the side here that is an atv mount for a three-point hitch and a loader system and some pallet forks so this is our garden shed and what's down by the garden storage area going up the driveway here we'll get a little bit more action okay so when we first moved up here we bought the mobile home again this is a 14 by 80. it's a 30 year old mobile home that we bought and paid 3 500 bucks for it i gutted it remodeled it and it's our home it looks very nice inside it's cozy and it's good for saving money right now and this is our shop this is a 26 by 40 shop and it is so crammed full of stuff don't build a shop that small it's too small that's our fuel truck right there got the jeep and we'll do a video on the jeep pretty soon here this is the cummins dodge ram unicorn with our flatbed trailer this is our abi manure spreader that thing is awesome that's the chicken processing equipment and this is a pasture out here we've got some fencing materials a nice tartar farm and ranch sweep system that's going up and this is our mobile chicken coop so if you look out here in this pasture this was all overgrown in brush and pines that were falling and toppling all over top of each other our dump truck that's not currently running right now and that's big t the tym 1104 tractor got it stored up here got a lot of future projects going on right up here so we're up here to the equipment yard on the stoney ridge farm this is a tobacco barn it's where tobacco used to be picked and hung to dry back in the day that building is a circa 1918-1916 building got a few projects things going on here got a disc harrow got ourselves a titan grapple just some storage area right here basically this is the moscow sickle bar mower and i've got to do a repair on it as soon as i get the weather to do a repair i don't want it sitting out in the yard taken apart during an ice storm so that's why we're not doing that today this is a six foot tartar farm and ranch mowing deck that we'll be using we'll be testing that out this year and right here under these black mats these are mats that they use in tractor trailers to keep the loads from shifting they're old they're worn out but they make great cover for wood so underneath here are old barn wood logs that we're going to be using when we get ready to build the permanent home here on the farm so storage storage storage lane shark mower tr3 rake great for driveways great for smoothing out land um the woods bb72 x is right there that's another six foot brush cutter this is our project and this project to be coming up in the spring is getting this batwing mower back up and running it's a pto driven machine and hopefully it does great got a few more attachments sitting over here tree clipper if you guys are fans of the youtube channel you've seen a lot of this stuff fencing materials got fencing materials stockpiled the good thing about us building our fences out of metal posts is that you can stockpile metal posts so when metal prices go down which they don't much you can stockpile your post and your wire cool now this is the hay yard we've got a little bit of hay left over and those are pipes those are culvert pipes for us to put across creek crossings and road crossings for the farm now let's see the equipment building okay all kinds of fun stuff here for future videos equipment building earl where's earl been earl is our massey ferguson 65 tractor there's a massey ferguson 240 tractor john deere 250 skid steer and the john deere 5065 tractor and also little t so big t is over here big t right there big t is 110 horsepower tymt 1104 and little t is the tym t254 we're gonna be putting that little backhoe to work pretty soon too got just more storage rock our cattle handling area is going to be put right here this rock in piles is sitting here so i can get all that set up but it's way too muddy you can see just driving the atv and that little tym tractor is rutting up this area now future plans our big shop the future big shop is going right here this is our upper garden i have to come through here with the skid loader clean up all of the soil that i built i put down probably man at least three or four tandem dump truck loads that's a 14 ton dump truck load basically of manure and compost on that garden area we got to scoop it up throw it in the back of the dump truck and take it down to the other garden and we'll only have one family garden and this is where we'll be working on equipment and stuff so hopefully by june this will be gone this will all be graveled and we'll start pouring concrete and getting footings in place for a huge building it's going to either be 60 by 150 or 50 by 150. post a comment tell me what you think about that size is that too small or is it just right for a farm this size are you lost already do you have your bearings the house is directly that way we're gonna get a drone shot of flying over this upper field so this area was cleared when we bought the land so there was about a two acre field right here and about a five acre field up on the top and you'll get the drone footage we're gonna fly right from the top and we're gonna cruise right over the house go right over the garden and the honeybees where we were and to the other side of the farm where the cows are right now and that's where we're gonna drive [Music] we're down here at the other side of the farm so we've crossed the road the house is right up there our wooden fence is right here built that wooden fence in a video uh last year i guess over about a three or four part series and we are at the second hay yard the hay yard down here for this pasture now the cows are gonna start mooing man they get excited when i come running because it's supper time it's getting close to supper time for the cows we've got ice storm coming in so what i gotta do is put out extra bales today so we'll bring that little tym 254 tractor down here we'll unroll a bale for today with the atv and we'll take bales and we'll set them out along this ridge line right here where there isn't a lot of topsoil what we want to do is let those cows trample in whatever they can trample in to help build the soil right here on this hillside you'll see it in the drone footage you'll see nice pasture and pasture with dirt exposed so as i'm flying over you can kind of get a look right now and the cows are probably going to be eating in that footage i think you'll really appreciate it in about a year you'll see how this improves it's going to really really improve now for the cows we have a watering system that's a little bit different than most people so above us is a pond right up there there's a pond you can see it in the drone footage also as we fly over down this fence line i have piping ran it's three quarter inch poly pipe and i have two water tanks right here this is not our permanent water setup but it is our water setup for now to get by until i can get an agricultural well drilled over here and we start pumping water to frost free water tanks okay so our frost free water feeders or waterers will be in place hopefully by next fall we can start intensively grazing in other words we're going to be grazing mob grazing our property here via those water tanks in other words those water tanks are going to be the central area and we'll be mob grazing our areas here we're going to show you some stockpiled forage on the other side of the farm there's so much grass over there but the fencing is incomplete and you'll see that too cows are not that cow always yells cows are not humping in the background that's kind of uh what cows do they just kind of crawl all over each other sometimes to establish dominance so let's take you down and show you it was 19 degrees last night and this is our water tank set up nothing froze and we'll show you why nothing froze it's right down here this is why our water system is not freezing up you see that running that water is running straight out of the pond so it's going from the pond down all the piping all the way down here we're probably a quarter of a mile away or something like that and that water is constantly running again it's going to be 19 degrees tonight we've got to keep water moving and water won't freeze if it gets down to like zero it still might freeze and there's some ice on the ground right here but that's the system that we have in place right now and as the summer progresses this year we'll put more tanks down the line so we can keep the cows watered and block off all of this area for intensive mob grazing we'll just set it into different sections and mob grays cool now we're going to hop on the atv and we're going to go down in the woods to the far side of the farm which is way over here over the top of that hill there's 90 acres over here that's that behavior i was telling you about it's a dominance behavior not humping behavior that's just what cows do now you'll see in the drone footage the hillside right here and the hillside in front of the house and you'll see where it looks like bales of hay have been rolled out and strode out all over everywhere it's on purpose what we use is called a greg judy bail unroller there'll be a link in the video description there's a link on the stoneyridgefarmer.com website if you want to get a hat or whatever if you go over there and check it out there's a link to greg's site this tool has saved me so much on the farm and it's helping me build my soil that's what it's all about this balin roller is building the soil on the farm it's an instrumental piece of equipment that we have here on the farm i don't need to sell you one and i don't make money selling you one i'm just telling you about it and it's really awesome it hooks to the atv we use a light footprint on our land that way we're not rutting it up with a 10 000 pound tractor we're taking a thousand pound atv and a thousand pound bail and roller and bala hay and rolling it out lots of weight lots of time saved and lots of ruts saved all right where we're going now is kind of over the river and through the woods uh we'll be going down our gravel road and we'll cut into the woods here we'll take you over on the other side of the farm which is right up there and we just cleared off about 50 acres we'll take you to the new land that we just cleared and show you how good the grass is doing the grass come up nicely so if you caught last weekend's video we installed this culvert pipe it is doing its job absolutely perfectly now up here is a 24 or 25 acre section of land that we cleared last year and you can look up on the hillside and see the grass is doing absolutely awesome the grass down here isn't doing so well now we smoothed the land over before we seated here and we did not smooth the land over up there so what does that tell you smooth land is harder to establish grass seed on than land that's been tilled up and turned so the land that was back drugged by the bulldozer did better than the land that was smoothed out pretty cool interesting information learning every day here on the farm we're down here at the gate to the other side of the property this is a road that i built here on the farm so i hired some guys to come in and push it out and then i put gravel down smooth it out and made this road we will have a cabin future project cabin project over here on the other side of the farm and lessons to be learned no trespassing purple paint means no trespass no trespassing sign means no trespass cameras i have signs that say smile your own camera because you are on camera i have game cameras set up all over the farm in areas that could be how do you say it infiltrated easily so protect yourself protect your livestock protect your property protect your farm guys put up some cheap game cameras it's all good the cameras that i do put up people can't see they cannot see the cameras and i can see them so if i have any trouble anybody coming in and out of our farm anyone is filmed and photographed so i have record of anyone that's come in and out of this place totally all over the whole farm security is very important to me and it's not that i'm paranoid it's that i want to be prepared and every gate is locked every single gate hands down on the farm is locked every cross fence gate every gate if you don't have your gates locked go get locks can you cut the lock of course does the average guy have boat cutters in his car no but does the average teenage kid want to pull a prank yes they do so what if they came in here and went through your gate and went four-wheeling in your field and left your gate open and you had 30 cows running around out there in the road and somebody hit them with a minivan full of kids how horrible would you feel because all you had to do was put a lock on that gate think about it [Music] stash right here is pipe this pipe is for a future pond project we're going to ride over there and i'll show you where that is here in just a minute [Music] this is a creek crossing that typically will overflow we're going to be replacing those pipes at some point all right up on this knoll right here is where we're gonna be building the cabin it's either gonna be right here in this little grove of oaks and brush or it's going to be right here overlooking a waterfall area let me pull up just a little bit and you guys can see this is the stoney ridge falls right here very very pretty area i think a cabin overlooking that would be super cool man and we already have a campsite area set up down here you're getting ready to learn why we can't move the cows all the way across the farm this area of land right here and where the water falls directly behind you but this area of land butts up to that field that we were just by where the cows were at this is our new fencing in this spot it's low to the ground it needs to be attached to the post when we drive down here you're gonna see we can just about drive underneath uh we're almost there and here we are so either we're trying to finish in a bunch of giraffes or we need to get this fence down so we've got to bring the skid loader down here when it's not so muddy look at how muddy it's just soaking wet the ground is sopping wet probably two and a half feet down into the ground so that's got to be fixed before we can get our cattle over here crew is on down i've got some fill dirt and we are reaching the northernmost part of our farm and virginia is behind you and north carolina is that way i built a little bit of a watering hole right here for wildlife and i also dug out some dirt so we'd have some field dirt because you're always needing field dirt on the…
