What happens here

The project begins with the exterior wall sheathing and roof structure already in place, typically covered with house wrap (like Tyvek HomeWrap) and roof underlayment. The initial step involves installing the fascia boards, which are long pieces of lumber (usually 1x or 2x material) that are nailed to the ends of the roof rafters. These boards run along the perimeter of the roof edge, creating a smooth, finished surface to which gutters and drip edge will eventually attach. Ensure the fascia boards are cut to the correct length and are flush with the top edge of the rafter tails.

Goal: Create the finished edge of the roof eave

Tools and materials

  • Extension Ladder — Accessing the roof eaves for installation
  • Measuring Tape — Accurately measuring fascia board lengths
  • Pneumatic Nail Gun — Efficiently fastening fascia boards
  • Fascia Boards — Creating the vertical finished edge of the roof overhang
  • Nails — Securing the fascia boards to the rafter tails
