excavation to stone grading

What happens here

Two workers meticulously level and pitch the bedding course using metal pipes as guides and a long screed board (or a straight edge). The pipes are strategically positioned to create a slight incline, ensuring a precise grade for drainage. The screed board is pulled along these pipes, removing excess material and leaving a perfectly smooth and pitched surface. This step is critical to ensure that storm water will "shed right off" the future paver surface and not pool near the house, as emphasized in the video.

Goal: Create a perfectly level and pitched bedding course for optimal drainage.

Tools and materials

  • Level — Verifying the grade and pitch of the screeded surface
  • Measuring Tape — Measuring and setting the pitch of the screed pipes
  • Metal Pipes — Acting as guide rails for screeding the bedding course
  • Screed Board — Leveling and pitching the bedding course material
