Excavated and based.

What happens here

After achieving the desired excavation depth, a geo-textile fabric (also known as landscape fabric or geotextile weed barrier) is laid over the entire excavated area. This fabric is clearly visible in the video lining the base of the trench, underneath the stone. Its primary purpose is to act as a separation layer between the newly introduced stone base and the underlying disturbed soil, preventing the aggregates from sinking into the soft subsoil and maintaining proper drainage. This significantly enhances the long-term stability and performance of the patio or walkway.

Goal: Separate base material from subsoil and enhance drainage

Tools and materials

  • Staple Gun — Securing the fabric to the subsoil in windy conditions or on sloped areas
  • Utility Knife — Cutting the geo-textile fabric to size and shape
  • Geo-textile Fabric — Separating the stone base from the soil and enhancing drainage
