Erosion Control that Works for your Property or Farm....Prepping for the extreme!

What happens here

Three weeks after installation, following a severe rainstorm (1.5 inches in 15 minutes), Josh inspects the sites. He observes a substantial amount of muddy water flowing down the main driveway, highlighting the ongoing overall drainage problem. However, at the first straw wattle site, the water backed up behind the wattles, and new grass growth is evident. The wattles successfully slowed down the water, preventing a repeat of the previous washout. At the silt fencing site, the fencing effectively trapped silt and created temporary ponds, demonstrating its ability to slow water and minimize soil loss. Josh concludes that both straw wattles and silt fencing are effective in slowing water speed and preventing land damage, especially when used in conjunction.

Goal: Evaluate the effectiveness of the erosion control measures after a significant rainfall event.

gonna be raining all right we're getting the true test here as soon as this rain storm stops we're gonna go check our Roshan control measures and see if they worked I'd like to go out there in the rain but I don't think it'll be too good for the camera here hopefully it's not dark just now we got about an inch and a half of rain in about 15 minutes it just dumped if you look there's a river flowing down basically the driveway here and we're gonna show you this hillside that we live on here our farm man water moves down this thing so let's go check out all of our little erosion control places I think I'm gonna get a little bit wet but that's okay I think we can take it a little spring shower never hurt anybody right any piece of advice I could give a person if they're starting to farm or starting a homestead is don't start it don't build it on a hill so the last time we got a huge torrential downpour like this this new place that I fixed washed out right after I repaired it now you can see these erosion erosion sausages these erosion rolls of straw have slowed the water down and that's what tears up the land it's the speed of the water so they've slowed it down enough to where it didn't wash out and the grass has taken over too but you can see they ran over it ran over let's walk down here to the second section that I took you guys and showed you and that's another piece right there so they did their job they didn't wash all the dirt right off down here like they did before water is running over our road down here and this is what happens it's just what happens here on the Stoney Ridge farm when it rains so we just cleared this spot right here there were some stumps in here we had the stumps removed a bunch of rocks removed we cleared this up and instead of going up and down the hill we went side to side no erosion issue whatsoever on this piece and we're on a steep hillside this basically forms a bowl and that bowl forms a river right down here I'll show you so this is what we put in and it slowed the water down you can see water is backing up behind this erosion mat it's a little pond right there there's a little backup back here so this stuff works guys if you decide you've got a washing problem you can see it's just filtering through right here it slows the water down and keeps from tearing your land up so it works it does work so what you're seeing here is water that has come off from this entire hillside right here all down the driveway from the house…
