What happens here

This project outlines a comprehensive approach to combating severe lawn erosion on a farm using eco-friendly methods. It involves identifying and preparing eroded areas, installing organic straw wattles and plastic silt fencing to slow water flow, and reseeding with grass, culminating in a post-rainfall assessment to confirm the effectiveness of these sustainable practices.

hey folks this is Josh Tony rich farmer welcome to the farm blog today look how green the grass is it's not like that in some places on the farm and so today we're going to go and we're gonna fix something I already fixed one time before in a video probably two weeks ago we had a torrential downpour and we're expecting torrential downpours again tomorrow we're supposed to get one to two inches of rain via gully washer thunderstorm type weather tomorrow so come along on the farm blog today we're gonna have some fun we're gonna be putting in some erosion control measures to hopefully get a hold of the erosion issues that we're having here on about three places on the farm all right there boy come out what [Music] Neeraj father let me explain what we got here so there was a area that was about this wide that was washing so I took some topsoil slash filled dirt and filled it all in dressed it all up put grass seed on it and we got blasted with like an inch of rain in like 15 minutes and it all washed off right down the hill so I went right back grab the ventrac with the landscape rake on it and pushed it all right back up the hill with the exception of what already came up so a lot of the grass has already came up here we're gonna recede it we're gonna spread that straw and then we're gonna put in some measures to stop erosion there are these big logs that basically are full of straw it's a mesh net on the outside of it if you guys know what they're called post it down there in the video description I can't remember what the heck those guys called them but its erosion prevention measures to stop this water to slow it down water is not the problem speed and water is the problem let's go look at number two we're gonna call this they're running and gunning vlog because I'm gonna hop off the Gator and show you what we got going on we have some trees cut they're getting ready to move the powerlines so we've got trees laying down right here and these are all gonna be saw logs hopefully for a portable sawmill that we may be talking to Lucas mills about getting so we've got some Oaks two big Oaks down here and an oak and two hickories right here and this is the front yard we're down here in the way too much mowing this should be pasture this shouldn't be long but I can't help myself those guys chipped up on the brush and they threw it right here so we'll be using that around the fruit trees and around the honey bees here pretty soon too will get the little scoop and we'll scoop it out and spread it around the honey bees so we don't have to walk through tall grass with them I've got the dogs trained to only run on the left hand side of any vehicle so that the driver can constantly see where the dogs are pretty cool let's show you the next area of misery and I forgot to get the grass eater while I was up at the tobacco barn but here it is so once again an area that washes out constantly washes out just always wash and always a problem and we got to fix it so like two weeks ago this was like the Grand Canyon it was probably eight or ten inches maybe even twelve inches deep in some spots we smoothed it all out we showed you doing that with the ventrac it all washed out within like 15 minutes all the water came rolling down this hill and that's the house up there all the water came rolling down this hill and washed all across the road these crazy weather patterns that we're having right now are a huge problem when it comes to erosion on a farm it's a lot to think about all the time every time it rains and pours down rain in the city it's fun like oh the streets are flooding every time it does it on the farm I'm like oh money's going down the hill water [Music] dogs love the creek get that water get that water good doggies free guys you may or may not know that German Shepherds like to work they like to do something they like to have a chore so we basically put them in the water si water they go to water and then they sit there until I release them by saying free pretty cool smart dogs here we go oh don't ruin my pretty new grass this is an area that we've just seated and it's coming in good but we've got an area of erosion down here it's washing down toward the pond and we want to get a hold on it pretty quickly here so there are two spots one little spot right here and one little spot on the side of this matting right here so we're gonna put that guy out we're going to cut it up into pieces and put it out before I start putting this out I want you to see it it's just basically straw in a mesh net and it's tied up with this string you just pull your string boom good to go it's designed for landscapers and that's a ten-foot roll so we'll put a five-foot section somewhere right in here to slow the water down to keep that from washing out at gully and then we've got another little spot right in here and like I said guys it's the speed of the water that we've got to worry about so we'll slow it down right here and hopefully avoid this erosion now I've never used this stuff before but my plan is to roll it out and cut it into two or maybe even three sections to slow this water down I think the first section I'm going to cut is gonna be right here and I brought some zip ties to zip tie it back together so we'll shake out a little straw on the land here just just fine zip ties I'm gonna put on here are not biodegradable but that's my idea so we cut this guy in two and then we'll pull up our net and we'll put a zip tie on there and basically take a 10-foot section which cost somewhere in the neighborhood of twenty eight two bucks something like that and we'll make short little sections little logs just drive some heavy-duty states right down in here and that should do it one more erosion sausage put in place right here the thought process here as this erosion sausage it gets wet it settles into the ground and it sticks so this will hopefully eliminate my erosion problems all together fingers crossed so with this one we don't have to put down any grass seed the other one we've got to put down grass seed straw and then erosion sausages erosion sausages number one two three and four are in place fingers crossed there so the next product we have is called silt fence and basically this is a plastic tarp type material with a stake built into it and we're gonna run across this area that's been washing and slow the silt down and hopefully will stop this flooding issue all together basically I'll lay it out here and it rolled itself back up so that's cool I'll unroll it it's like it's got some kind of sticky material on there to keep it together right now some of you pro landscape guys they're looking at me like I'm crazy so if you have any comments or any suggestions here guys please leave them down there in the comments section teach me for sure or teach us all so the thought process here again is slowing the water down and hopefully the silt will build up against the fence slow this water down and not make this huge washout such a problem we're also going to put some of the erosion sausages out to we're going to put those up a little bit higher and that will slow the water down too so it's all about slowing water summer grass seed takes so what I originally thought was a paint or something sticky to hold this together with is actually has turn the wood into powder that whole section is no good awesome if not for a bad luck man no luck at all got awesome garbage cool work wasted you're wondering what I'm doing Wednesday night's the four live streams this is Wednesday it's 6:30 so hopefully I'll get all this knocked out and then we'll go live on YouTube busy busy times only 16 more steaks to drive grass the seed and those two straw bales down on that rock you got to spread those so what I figured out over time working with these is that they're separated into two distinct sections and they're tied off in the middle so all I got to do is cut it in one spot and I don't have to dump any straw out and put a zip tie on the end cool so putting a zip tie on right here zip it down tight give her a little cut then I have two different sections for stakes in each one you got to drive them in right in the gully part cuz that's where it's gonna try and run underneath this roll a straw oh hey Beast let's get you a good look at what we just did so we put basically sausage fence sausage fence sausage fence and another erosion sausage right there oh guys tell me what the name for that is I think a Trojan sausage is pretty funny messing up a good new hat this is the before and that's the after pretty good I think it turned out pretty well so if you go to your local landscape supply store or farm store you should be able to find these little rolls and basically again it's just like a roll of straw I totally spaced out what it's called and I'm not gonna look it up and working too hard here so we've got to go spread the straw and spread the grass seed that's on the back of the Gator down at the other place and we're gonna check it out when it's raining so next time I see you it's gonna be raining all right we're getting the true test here as soon as this rain storm stops we're gonna go check our Roshan control measures and see if they worked I'd like to go out there in the rain but I don't think it'll be too good for the camera here hopefully it's not dark just now we got about an inch and a half of rain in about 15 minutes it just dumped if you look there's a river flowing down basically the driveway here and we're gonna show you this hillside that we live on here our farm man water moves down this thing so let's go check out all of our little erosion control places I think I'm gonna get a little bit wet but that's okay I think we can take it a little spring shower never hurt anybody right any piece of advice I could give a person if they're starting to farm or starting a homestead is don't start it don't build it on a hill so the last time we got a huge torrential downpour like this this new place that I fixed washed out right after I repaired it now you can see these erosion erosion sausages these erosion rolls of straw have slowed the water down and that's what tears up the land it's the speed of the water so they've slowed it down enough to where it didn't wash out and the grass has taken over too but you can see they ran over it ran over let's walk down here to the second section that I took you guys and showed you and that's another piece right there so they did their job they didn't wash all the dirt right off down here like they did before water is running over our road down here and this is what happens it's just what happens here on the Stoney Ridge farm when it rains so we just cleared this spot right here there were some stumps in here we had the stumps removed a bunch of rocks removed we cleared this up and instead of going up and down the hill we went side to side no erosion issue whatsoever on this piece and we're on a steep hillside this basically forms a bowl and that bowl forms a river right down here I'll show you so this is what we put in and it slowed the water down you can see water is backing up behind this erosion mat it's a little pond right there there's a little backup back here so this stuff works guys if you decide you've got a washing problem you can see it's just filtering through right here it slows the water down and keeps from tearing your land up so it works it does work so what you're seeing here is water that has come off from this entire hillside right here all down the driveway from the house from above the house from all the way up the top of the hill we're talking 40 acres of land of farmland my exposed farmland but grassland and the water is coming down through here so this is you can see how it's clear right here we just cleared some ditch work and that's the red mud that you're seeing right here and this is what happens water washes over when it rains that amount water washes over the creek because we have an inadequate pipe that's what happens here on the farm so what's the next move to stop this from happening over and over and over and over again I think the next move is to come in here and ditch this out a little bit better so in some future videos this area has to dry out good this summer in some future videos we're gonna build up a little bit right here and we're gonna while this ditch to be bigger deeper so that water flows down through here and goes through the pipe under the road instead of going across the road guys I hope you can appreciate this kind of video that shows you the different types of erosion control measures that actually work I like the straw rolls the best but I think for a steeper spot and a bigger spot the silk fencing works the best to slow it down too so both of them in conjunction with each other right here did an awesome awesome job this flows like a river when there's a big storm so everything worked out great thanks a lot for watching guys hope you learned a little bit I hope to see you again here on the Stoney Ridge farm please pound that like button subscribe to the channel and we'll see you again soon all right [Music] hereit's we've had some ways supposed to be Stone Tyrion whoo
