What happens here
After all pavers are laid, edge restraints are installed around the perimeter to prevent the pavers from shifting or spreading. These can be made of plastic, concrete, or metal and are typically secured with long spikes driven into the sub-base. Once the edge restraints are in place, the voids within the permeable pavers and the joints between them need to be filled. This is done using a clean, angular aggregate, such as 3/8-inch clear stone, or a specific permeable joint filler. The material is spread over the surface and then swept into the voids and joints. A plate compactor may be used over the surface (with a protective mat) to vibrate the aggregate into place and settle the pavers. This step ensures the permeability of the system and provides additional stability.
Goal: Secure the pavers and activate the permeability of the system.
Tools and materials
- Broom — For sweeping aggregate into paver voids and joints
- Edge Restraints Permaloc — To secure the perimeter of the paver installation
- Plate Compactor Wacker Neuson — For compacting the final surface and settling aggregate
- Protective Mat — To protect paver surface during compaction
- Rubber Mallet — For gently tapping edge restraints or pavers if needed
- Steel Spikes — To anchor edge restraints
