What happens here

Once all the pavers are laid, the entire area is compacted using a plate compactor. This important step vibrates the pavers into the bedding sand, locking them together and creating a firm, level surface. After compaction, polymeric sand is spread evenly over the paver surface. This specialized sand, often visible as a fine, light-colored powder in the video, is swept into all the joints between the pavers. Once the joints are filled, any excess sand is blown off the surface, and the polymeric sand is lightly misted with water to activate its binding agents, which harden to create a durable, weed-resistant, and insect-resistant joint filler.

Goal: Lock pavers into place and create durable, weed-resistant joints.

Tools and materials

  • Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into paver joints
  • Garden Hose with Spray Nozzle — Lightly misting the polymeric sand to activate it
  • Leaf Blower — Removing excess polymeric sand from the paver surface before wetting
  • Plate Compactor — Vibrating and settling the pavers into the bedding sand
  • Polymeric Sand — Filling the joints between pavers, binding them, and preventing weeds/insects
