Space and Fasten Deck Boards
At 0:00 in
Do you always install mid span blocking even when the span doesn’t require it?
What happens here
Begin by kneeling near the edge of the deck, positioning yourself to work along the length of the new deck board. Take the deck board spacer tool and place it between the previously installed deck board and the new board you are currently fastening. Apply slight pressure to ensure the new board is snug against the spacer, creating a uniform gap. Once satisfied with the spacing, pick up the pneumatic nail gun. Aim the nozzle squarely over a joist beneath the deck board, ensuring the fasteners will penetrate both the deck board and the joist. Trigger the nail gun to drive one or two nails into the board. Repeat this process, moving along the length of the deck board, positioning the spacer at each joist crossing and fastening the board securely with the nail gun. This ensures consistent spacing and firm attachment across the entire board.
Goal: Securely attach deck boards with uniform gaps to the deck joists
Tools and materials
- Air Compressor — To provide pressurized air to power the pneumatic nail gun
- Deck Board Spacer Tool — To ensure consistent gaps between deck boards
- Hearing Protection — To protect ears from loud noise generated by the nail gun
- Pneumatic Nail Gun — To efficiently drive fasteners (nails) through deck boards into joists
- Safety Glasses — To protect eyes from flying debris or fasteners
- Deck Boards — The primary material being installed to form the deck surface
- Decking Nails — Fasteners used by the nail gun to secure the deck boards
