What happens here

Begin by positioning the first wooden 'scab' against the main wooden beam. Ensure the beveled edge of the 'scab' is oriented correctly, typically facing upwards and outwards, to allow for water runoff as explained later in the video. Once positioned, use a DeWalt impact driver equipped with a suitable driver bit (e.g., Torx or Square drive for structural screws) to drive a structural screw through the 'scab' and into the main beam. Drive the screw until it is flush or slightly countersunk with the surface of the 'scab' to ensure a strong, secure connection.

Goal: Secure the first wooden brace to the main beam.

Tools and materials

  • DeWalt Impact Driver DeWalt — Driving structural screws quickly and efficiently into wood
  • Driver Bit — To match the head of the structural screws being used
  • Main Wooden Beam — The primary structural component to which the 'scabs' are attached
  • Wooden Scab — Providing alignment and structural support to the main beam
  • Structural Screws GRK Fasteners — Fastening the 'scab' to the main beam
