DIY How to build a Deck - Step by Step Guide to Composite decks pt2 of our "Idiot proof" series
What happens here
There are several ways to approach building stairs for a composite deck. One option is to purchase pre-cut stair stringers, which are typically uniform in size (e.g., 7 inches in rise, as shown). Alternatively, you can cut your own stringers from lumber. Regardless of the method, ensure that all stringers are perfectly level and consistent in rise and run. For composite stairs, the stair treads themselves can be picture-framed, similar to the deck surface, using mitered composite boards to create a finished look, rather than just butting them together. This will require cutting the composite to fit around the stringer's profile and securing it to the stringer.
Goal: Construct and finish the stair treads with composite material.
