Demonstrating how water flows down a fascia 👍 Just a demo not to spec roof! #roofing #rain #learn

What happens here

To illustrate the correct function of the drip edge, the demonstrator uses tin snips to remove or adjust the 'starter and shingle' that was causing the water to wick back. Once this element is removed, water sprayed onto the roof now correctly flows over the drip edge, shedding away cleanly and staying dry 'all the way through' to the fascia. This highlights that the drip edge's primary function is to direct water away from the roof structure when unhindered.

Goal: Show how the drip edge prevents water wicking when properly exposed.

Tools and materials

  • Garden Hose — Simulating rain
  • Roof Edge Mock-up — Demonstrating the correct water runoff
  • Tin Snips — Removing or adjusting the shingle on the mock-up
  • Water N/A — Simulating rain

What they say

Hide

When your drip edge is ran tight, the water goes from here, down, around, and goes down your fascia, and even can run back all the way to your wall. If we pull out our starter and shingle, this water stays away from the drip edge and doesn't even have a chance to make it back. As you see here, we stay dry all the way through. It's best to pull both out, but even in this case, it still doesn't really make it back to the drip edge. While your drip edge is supposed to be gapped, we all know it doesn't always happen.
