DECK FRAMING - How To Install A Deck Ledger Board
What happens here
After removing the old ledger and damaged sheathing, the team prepares the exposed house rim joist. They ensure the surface is clean and relatively flat. Then, a self-adhesive, rubberized roofing underlayment, commonly known as ice and water shield, is carefully applied directly to the exposed house sheathing. This material is cut to size using a utility knife, extended as high as possible under the existing siding, and smoothed down with hands to create a continuous, watertight barrier. The primary purpose is to ensure that any water that might get behind the new ledger board will hit this membrane and drain away, preventing moisture contact with the house's framing.
Goal: Create a waterproof barrier on the house rim joist.
