Compact the Backfilled Soil

What happens here
After each successive layer of backfill has been deposited, thoroughly compact the soil. This critical step can be accomplished using a vibratory plate compactor, a jumping jack compactor, or, if appropriate for the site and equipment, by repeatedly driving a skid steer back and forth over the backfilled trench area. Proper compaction is absolutely essential to prevent any future settling of the ground. Without adequate compaction, the area over the trench could develop depressions, uneven surfaces, or potentially lead to structural damage to any driveways, sidewalks, or foundations constructed above the trench. Continue the process of layering and compacting until the trench is filled evenly to the surrounding grade.
Goal: Achieve stable and dense soil in the trench to prevent future settling.
