What happens here
This video documents the complex and challenging process of installing large, heavy wooden beams (including a 60-foot glulam beam) for an A-frame cabin located on a sloped, wooded terrain. The project faces significant logistical and safety hurdles related to equipment access, lifting capacity, and terrain stability, requiring improvisation and careful planning to ensure the structural integrity of the cabin and the safety of the crew.

(13,061 characters)[Music] beating all right welcome to another episode of building this A-frame cabin in the woods today we got three Miracles that need to accomplish Miracle number one the 60ft beam needs to be able to clear the path down below going backwards that's Miracle number one Miracle number two we need to be able to get a crane in that same tight spot Miracle number three is getting that sucker up and threading it through a needle between the trees to get that beam in place lots of Miracles happening today start praying [Music] boys our only other option is if you dump everything over there I would have to like by hand run each 16 footer [Music] this is not what the plan was for this at all change of plans folks [Music] well the uh I'm assuming the 16f Footers are for those uh bump out sections for the dining and kitchen but the long ones that go from the beam all the way down to the footings we're missing more supplies the roofing Rafters are 16f Footers we need the mega long ones which I think they're like 30 feet I'm not sure we're about to find out but they're not here which sucks 8 and 3/4 36 in deep 60 ft long Miracle number one is done on to Miracle number two my goal is going going to be using my Fork Clift to throw it up here and throw it up there that'll give the crane more opportunity to get a little more closer to the center of the building and he won't be interfering in that tree yeah let's do that yeah he's going to be wanting to sit somewhere right here so off to do some shady off to do some shady would holy smokes this is what $115,000 looks like right here 60 ft 36 in wide 8 and 3/4 thick my heart is pounding man on to Miracle number two I got to use my forklift and try to shimmy it up the mountain there or up this Hillside so the crane can come in here have room to grab it and position in place if it's right here or even if it's shimy it closer the crane cannot make it through without damaging it or not stabilizing his own rig all right guys full transparency here uh I've been running on fumes lately with this cabin project seems like nothing is going to plan I'm stressed I'm not sleeping I'm negle cting my physical health my mental health so I decided it's enough is enough and it's time to take my physical mental health back to where I was before this project started so that's why I'm excited to talk with the sponsors of today's video better help you don't need to have clinical mental health issues like depression or anxiety to benefit from therapy sometimes it's just having someone to help you see things from a different perspective therapy is a safe space where you can find and share what's on your mind whether it's stress sadness worries or relationship issues without the fear of judgment the therapists are trained Mental Health professionals who are there to listen ask questions and help you see things from A New Perspective they can provide insight and teach you techniques to manage emotions reduce stress and make positive changes in your life and you know what starting therapy is easy with better help fill out a questionnaire and you'll be matched with a therapist in as little as a couple of days one of the best features of better help is that in the first therapist doesn't feel like the right fit for you you can easily switch to another one until you find someone who you really connect with so if you are struggling and think you'd benefit from therapy session click the link in description below or head to betterhelp.com slmb buildit and get 10% off your first month of therapy now let's get back into this cabin Fiasco what I really love about like experienced drivers truck drivers like Virgil he's been doing this for 30 years is uh they're so optimistic all the time no matter like how stuck you are in a situation so when he brought those uh Roofing Rafters they're 16 ft and it barely cleared it and usually they take their Muppet Fork Clift that kind of of it's like a spider essentially Maneuvers every way and these are like 25 Footers I think and I go Virgil I don't think you can get it up there and he's like we'll figure it out I love that Cabo mentality just we'll figure it out the plan here is use these straps and corner by Corner trying to get it over this little Ridge here so that my crane which is by the way ,000 just on fuel alone he's driving 2 and 1/2 hours here 2 and 1/2 hours away at 200 hours an hour so for 5 hours I'm dropping $1,000 just for 1 hour of work here so 1,200 bucks to run a crane $115,000 for this glue lamb please buy my t-shirts and watch my videos I can't afford this is quickly turning into a recovery [Music] Channel that's some heavy Des Sparks kind of stuff going on right now [Music] right my part's done the first miracle is done now we wait for the crane the ball is in his court and then we'll go from there this is the most stressful I've ever been in my entire life I'll be completely honest I did some crazy stuff as the abandon house stuff but nothing to this financial caliber or this weight capacity I'm way over my head on all of this so let's just start removing some of the stuff and then kind of going from there we're going to try we're going to try either there or here so it's I really thought today was going to be a lot easier than yesterday the crane cannot reach this far up the hill side I thought they're going to bring their biggest crane I thought there's only one crane but they just sent me a crane uh so he can't reach from there other problem is is if he comes up down this driveway the slope right here is way too steep so he's going to get high centered here he's afraid to go up there just because he thinks it's a loose packed ground and by the time his stabilizers go down uh it might just go into the ground like a hot butter knife so we don't even know if we're going to get get this beam up here um he's going to try to weigh it to see what it weighs and then he'll kind of crunch his own math to see what the risk factor here is I really thought today is going to work [Music] the length of the property I think is uh the building is uh 50 ft uh, 1500 lb over what I can lift at that distance at that at this distance way more than I can lift from that distance so what about where all this down below here yeah let's get the lift out of there yeah yeah take the lift to the to the top of the hill cuz uh if he's going to have trouble coming back out [Music] you said his suspension is already making a bunch of noise cuz he doesn't have air ride it's all direct to frame so it's a lot harder on the suspension he says even that slope right there is already just wish I was notified or at least asked about the reach capabilities I was assuming a big cran just coming you know we'll get the job done all right next week did you say Monday do you have a rig that's capable of doing this as you spoke to the ace crane crane doesn't work it's not long enough from my original plan from that road there um and because he doesn't have air ride suspension it's direct to frame that driveway is too steep he said his he feels like he's going to snap his chassis and a half so I'm left with a $1,000 bill for a job that can't get finished freaking blows dude we're trying to solve this problem right now uh the guy gave me a different contact which this is what frustrates me is I called when I ordered the crane I said I have a 60ft long beam they go cool no problem they didn't ask me the the distance we're traveling so they sent me a small outdated crane I thought they going to give me like the mother of all cranes that's why I was so nervous about him coming here that was a small tiny crane so they connected me with another Crane company they got a big boy that has all the capabilities that's going to come next week so we're set back even more my framewor guys are incredible we're going to try to Cowboy Up So what Alex is going to do this is also Alex is we're going to try to drag that beam up here again remember 4500 lb based off of the specs of this machine it could reach up to that height uh with a Max Capacity of 5,000 lb we're dealing with 4,500 lbs we're going to try to drag it out and then try to set the sucker on top let's do some cowboy [Applause] [Music] who who [Music] whoa right now right but we got this tree in the way you're a loov vato man I know the only way to drag it is if one corner goes across that road and then we pull it through [Music] here you'd have to go from probably this angle here n there's no way this is going to [Music] [Laughter] it's a oh so we went from only dealing with three miracles to now having to do six miracles in exchange for the miracle of the crane situation uh the fourth miracle was to bring it up here from the hill now we're going to try try to center it we literally only have three extra feet before this thing maxes out so the ropes can't be too long if this works out I owe these guys a lot of cases of beer a lot they're adding blocking there so when the ropes are there they don't start moving around and getting our beam off balance here it's actually a really brilliant idea it's sounds like it's not their first rodeo [Music] spe spee oh easy we need about another foot I think that one can clear it we we can we can we push it up onto it and then we we can we would have to shorten the strap we need one more foot out of this thing to clear we're going to try one of two options either spreading the ropes wider or uh shortening the ropes a little bit so uh at least we know that we can get it up there so far is if we spread them wider they're going to want to come together so I think trying to Loop them through again that's good I think we got there what if we Center him connect the beam with whatever Hardware is needed and then we swing this side over that what we're trying to do but it's kind [Music] of we are still inches just absolutely inches we can get one side on but the other side swings out one option could be move mov the straps closer to the end of the fork Cliff prongs but I mean that's suicidal borderline so um we're going to try to put a screw underneath once one side Center put a screw and then pull the other end over with momentum I guess while the forklift is still kind of propping it up inches man if the forklift had like an extra foot in it would be golden that's good yeah oh oh B it worked we got to move it over a little bit am B woo B oh now how are we going to yeah uh shake it like up and down up no no no no flat flat flat you got to flatten it out more Alex hold on tilting no no no no no no no we got to use a strap cuz if that tilt it collapses everything we got to figure out how to take one of those straps down and then with the strap oh man my heart was beating I say I say you get up there with the for uh with the lift we get one of these straps down you get over there and then we'll just set that [Music] end there it is that's called opening up a beer bottle with fork Clips that's some Chopsticks I need a nap after this I'm not even doing anything I swear that thing was tilted as soon as he come up there and if that thing tilt the sucker crashes and breaks everything that's been done everything all right lunch time I'm going to go on a beer run let's go get some yeah so yesterday was the most stressful most scariest day of my life but the giant beam got up to the top safely nobody got hurt nothing got damaged um it was a huge huge Victory but now that it's set right on top we're going to pocket it in so we're going to have roof Rafters coming up and hogging it from each side to make sure it's not going anywhere and at that point I think I'll sleep a lot more better at night knowing that this giant expensive beam is safe and sound and nobody can hurt me and my emotions after that so through this entire process uh there's a a big thing that I've learned that people are relying on you as the Builder and the general contractor to have answers for them and um often times you don't have those answers because this is the first time you're doing it so when the crane guy says I can't get up here what do we do um your team your framers might offer some solutions but one thing I did learn from this entire process is that every problem no matter how big or how small it is and your back is against the wall there is a solution there you just don't know it at that moment and sometimes things do work themselves out and um I'm glad they did in this case huge huge undertaking so uh a lot of lessons I'm learning learning learning to be good at problem solving um this as you're making that's that's a tough one nobody can teach you that you just got to I guess believe in the process well on a let or know guys we're here we're so excited you were with us through this entire Journey make sure you tune in for next week's video where we start Roofing off this entire structure it's going to be framed completely and I'll give you guys the grand tour and in the meantime here's a video thing you might enjoy oh and be sure to subscribe see you bye
