Comp Cams Factory Tour: How Does a Performance Camshaft Get Made?

What happens here

The video concludes by showcasing the fully assembled test engines, referred to as 'spin trons', and various test vehicles in the engineering garage. These setups allow engineers to rigorously test camshafts and other components under simulated and real-world conditions. They use specialized tools like strain gauges on valve springs and pushrods, and laser tracking of valves, along with precise encoders on the crankshaft, to measure valve motion and component stress at every degree of rotation. This comprehensive testing ensures that all products meet the highest performance and durability standards before being released to customers.

Goal: Understand the final testing and validation process for camshafts.

Tools and materials

  • Encoders — Measuring crankshaft rotation and position
  • Laser Tracking Equipment — Precisely tracking valve movement
  • Strain Gauges — Measuring stress on valve springs and pushrods
  • Test Engines — Simulating engine operation for camshaft testing
  • Test Vehicles Chevrolet Suburban — Real-world testing of camshafts and other components

unless we built it so this is the toy store at comp camps this is where all our engines are for testing everything for edelbrock and comp comes through here see the godzilla with the sheet metal intake on it different spintron blocks for an ls probably an old um top fuel block over there so do some top fuel development everything that you wanted here so throughout this test deal we have different cars for doing our um in vehicle testing we have a chassis dyno airflow bench spintron first spintron cell second spintron cell first dinosaur second dinosaur big chassis dinos over here so list for putting things in every product that we do at cop everything that we do comes through here and we qualified here we make sure that we have tested something and run it as hard as you are before it goes out before you put in your engine so you can see nice soundproof cells in here normal spintron setup will have a hole in the block over here so you can put a laser in there and measure the valve motion we'll have the ability to run strain gauges on valve springs we can run a load cell under the valve spring we run stain gauges on the rocker arm we're in strain gauges on the push rod laser tracking of the valve there's an encoder in there that measures every degree so we get one degree resolution coming out um you know just basically it's everything that go on an engine except instead of having a piston with combustions there's just a dummy crank an electric motor drives the drives the system the downside is the dummy crank doesn't have any crank throws on it so if you try to break in a flat tap it cam on that guess what doesn't happen there's no oil splash so you kill your camshafts we had to work on that and we came up with some interesting ways of making sure we got enough oil so we could actually test things on the spintron because yeah otherwise cam is fine it doesn't need as much oil but that flat tap is got to have the splash we got to have some splash which is one reason why it's so important to actually when you're doing a flight type break in is to not let the engine idle is to get it up to 2500 3000 rpm and let it stay up there is because you need that splash from the crank case to make sure you're getting enough oil where it's supposed to be when it's supposed to be there makes a lot of sense yeah they don't really explain that they just say you have to do this or it's bad yeah it it is bad we learned the hard way why it's bad yeah who gets to go out and test…
