By far the deepest foundation we’ve ever dug for a patio. #hardscape #paverpatio #construction

What happens here

With the virgin subgrade compacted, begin building up the patio foundation to the desired final patio level. This typically involves laying down multiple layers of granular fill, such as crushed stone or gravel, and compacting each layer individually. The video states the goal is to "build stone up to the patio level." Spread the first layer of base material (e.g., 4-6 inches of crushed stone), level it, and then thoroughly compact it. Repeat this process with subsequent layers until the top of your base material is at the correct height, allowing for the final patio surface material (e.g., pavers, concrete). Ensure proper drainage is considered during this phase.

Goal: Fill the deep excavation with stable, compacted base material up to the final sub-grade level for the patio surface.

Tools and materials

  • Level — Checking the level and slope of each compacted layer of base material
  • Plate Compactor Wacker Neuson — Compacting each layer of crushed stone to achieve maximum density and stability
  • Shovel Fiskars — Spreading and leveling the crushed stone layers
  • Wheelbarrow Jackson — Transporting large quantities of crushed stone from delivery to the patio area
  • Crushed Stone — Creating the primary load-bearing base layers for the patio foundation
  • Geotextile Fabric DeWitt — Separating the subgrade from the base material and aiding in drainage
