By far the deepest foundation we’ve ever dug for a patio. #hardscape #paverpatio #construction
What happens here
After the desired depth is achieved and the virgin subgrade is exposed, the next critical step is to compact it thoroughly. This process increases the soil's density, creating a firm and stable base that will not settle under the weight of the patio. Use a plate compactor or a jumping jack tamper for this task. Work in systematic passes across the entire excavated area, ensuring even compaction. If the soil is too dry, lightly moisten it to aid compaction, but avoid making it muddy.
Goal: Achieve maximum density and stability of the exposed virgin subgrade.
Tools and materials
- Gloves Mechanix Wear — Protecting hands from vibrations and abrasions during compaction
- Hearing Protection Howard Leight — Protecting ears from the loud noise generated by compaction equipment
- Plate Compactor Wacker Neuson — Compacting the soil to increase its density and load-bearing capacity
- Water — Lightly moistening dry soil to aid in compaction
