What happens here
This project details the initial framing stages of building an outdoor extension. It covers setting up the pressure-treated base plates on a concrete slab, precisely laying out and marking the wall lines, framing the walls (including doorways with headers), applying temporary bracing for stability, and finally, installing the exterior sheathing. The video highlights techniques for ensuring squareness, maintaining plumb, and structural considerations for large openings.

(6,827 characters)what's going on everybody welcome back to the vlog oh this thing oh we're going to show you how to build that in this video we've got plates going down we've got walls going up sheathing the whole nine so make sure you hit subscribe stay tuned all right we got our slab down we have all of our pins wet set now we're gonna snap some lines and set up our bottom plates for all of our walls so what we did was just pull six inches off of our slab on both sides by the house and out at the edge here and we made that measurement between the two marks to make sure that we are perfectly parallel we knew that we're really close with our forms here but we have some wiggle room because we have a two and a half inch facade that's going on here with inch and a half battens and then one inch thick deck material we were three eighths off of our measurement here so what we had to do was just split the difference three sixteenths off that's why we have two marks here but now we're good we can snap those lines we'll check for square then we can start laying out our bottom plates is this the tajima where did you get this chalk line keep it above keep it off the let me pull tight all right go down yeah i'm good is this a tajima we're gonna measure we're just gonna measure the same distance off we'll snap that line yeah and we'll make sure we're square uh measure off six inches again good [Music] i'm like 3 16 off really close all right so it gets greater the number is greater yeah so if anything that corners got to go in a little bit yeah but just like on the other side of the chalk line i mean i could live with that yeah that's not bad what are you guys doing next possibly getting attacked by a dog boy oh hey layla hey odie see that's a good boy that's a good boy and you're a good girl [Music] [Applause] so we obviously have these j-bolts which are holding our structure down to the slab but we're also putting in these concrete screws just to get this first one right up on our line makes it a little bit easier to line up both of these before we tighten down our bolts and get it ready but getting this second layer on here before you know it we'll be putting up balls getting to our rafters [Music] oh no oh god oh you got splinter oh he's digging out with his razor blade that's not sanitary all right well we got walls going up here typically it'll be a lot easier if we could build the walls on the ground then stand them up but with this double sill plate detail it's a little bit more difficult to do that so what we're doing is just building it one stick at a time and first things first we're setting all of our doorways check it out look at this nice 12 foot wide door here oh that's gonna be beautiful we have a three and a half by 12 inch beam above our door opening and to the left of it you can see that stud that goes all the way to the top it's called a king stud the two that actually support it are called jack studs on the walls make sure you get this plate flush with this yep is everyone wearing sunscreen yeah i did lost a lot of look at that is this one remember how skin tight this thing was in the winter it was like busting at the seams dang it somebody called it animal control why showing the beast how can i how can i assist you here i'm just kind of standing around um once i get this last plate why don't i start why don't i start cutting studs over here yeah there you go yeah like it didn't matter where that ended up somebody said they laid everything out so the bolts wouldn't be where the studs are but there's a bolt right where the stud needs to be tried to notch it out a little bit it's right next to our jack and king stud here so it'll be fine but a little bit nails flying sawdust in the air sun's out these puppies out [Applause] it's a nice cali corner you like california pizza you don't have to plumb them since it's reading good with you're always gonna be you're if you go this way you're going this way this way yep your 16 layout should be in the middle of the start so you're going to be a cool you'll be a quarter okay in either direction so as we're standing up our walls what we want to do is make sure everything is braced so it's all standing up plumb you can see we've done that with the two sidewalls now we're going to do the same thing with our front wall and just make sure that everything is locked in for justice until we get our rafters up get it sheathed then those braces can come down get like another chunk of wood come check it out from this angle come on i'm holding okay we gotta get the footage i know standing around you know what we're doing no just it was unrelated yeah it was about me no it wasn't what was it about you'll see in the video well we're ready to start sheathing this bad boy we have our walls up they're all braced they're nice and plum and we're doing pressure treated sheathing on this because we're going to basically be doing like a rain screen detail here we're going to have vertical battens that go over a weather barrier and then we're going to do horizontal deck boards so probably not super necessary but a little bit of extra protection and we always like that extra bit of insurance helps us sleep at night once we have the walls up and they're all braced and plumb the sheathing goes pretty quickly these are four by eight sheets and you can see we'll need a tiny rip above that full sheet because our walls are a little bit over eight feet tall [Music] three hit hammer challenge [Music] all right so we got these walls framed up let me show you a couple little details that are pretty important here first all the bracing that we have what we did with the bracing was just run it in between our walls we didn't want to drill into the concrete because didn't find it necessary so we have it sandwiched in between the walls we have these sandwiched in between those runs and then as you stand up each wall make sure you're plumbing it get that in there and those don't come off until we have the whole roof framed and sheathed the next thing that we did here make it a little bit easier it only called for a three and a half inch beam here but we wanted to bring it out flush with the interior wall as well instead of packing it out we just got a two inch lvl to add behind that it's going to make the opening that much stronger plus it's flush with our interior wall now and we won't have to pack it out or fuss with any of that a little bit extra money buying another lvl but i think it'll be worth it on a project this size well that's it for this vlog we've got these walls framed up next stop is the roof we're going to be cutting rafters we'll be setting the ridge we're going to be sheaving the roof all of that stuff so make sure you hit subscribe stay tuned and until next time this is premiere outdoor
