What happens here
Once the base is prepared and level, the new retaining wall is constructed. The video shows the wall being built with segmental retaining wall blocks, a common choice for its durability and ease of installation. The first course of blocks is laid directly on the prepared base, ensuring they are perfectly level and properly aligned. Subsequent courses are stacked, often using pins or interlocking features to secure them to the layer below. Behind the wall, a drainage layer of gravel (visible in the video) is installed, sometimes with a perforated drain pipe, to prevent hydrostatic pressure buildup. Geogrid reinforcement might be used for taller walls or those retaining significant loads. The area behind the wall is then backfilled with suitable material.
Goal: Build a new, stable, and aesthetically pleasing retaining wall.
Tools and materials
- Level — Ensuring each course of blocks is level
- Rubber Mallet — Adjusting block placement without damaging them
- Shovel — Backfilling behind the wall with gravel and soil
- Wheelbarrow — Transporting blocks, gravel, and backfill material
- Backfill Soil — Filling the area behind the drainage layer
- Drainage Gravel — Creating a free-draining layer behind the wall
- Perforated Drain Pipe — Collecting and diverting water from behind the wall
- Segmental Retaining Wall Blocks — Building the structure of the retaining wall
