Install Base Layers: Gravel and Sand

What happens here
Once the sub-base is prepared, lay down a layer of geotextile fabric to prevent the gravel base from mixing with the soil and to inhibit weed growth. Then, spread a uniform layer of crushed gravel (e.g., ¾ inch angular stone) over the entire area of the patio and walkway. This layer typically needs to be 4-6 inches thick for patios and 6-8 inches for driveways or areas with heavy loads. The gravel should be spread in lifts (layers) of no more than 2-3 inches, with each lift thoroughly compacted using the plate compactor. Ensure the gravel layer maintains the desired slope for drainage. Screed the surface of the compacted gravel to ensure it is level and smooth.
Goal: Create a stable, permeable base for the pavers.
Tools and materials
- Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel base
- Rakes and Shovels — Spreading gravel and sand
- Screed Boards — Leveling the sand bedding layer
- Spirit Level — Checking the level and slope of the base layers
- Concrete Sand — Providing a level and uniform bedding layer for the pavers
- Crushed Gravel — Creating the main structural base for the pavers
- Geotextile Fabric — Separating base layers from sub-base and weed prevention
