BACKYARD BONANZA PT 2 - Installing Decking and Starting Paver Patio

What happens here

Prepare the subgrade for the lower patio by laying down landscape fabric or a similar permeable base. Then, spread a layer of 3/4 clean stone (also known as ASTM 57 stone) over the landscape fabric. This angular stone interlocks well, provides good drainage, and is easier to compact than densely graded bases. The stone is compacted using a plate compactor. Next, screed a thin layer of 3/8 red stone as a setting bed for the pavers. This involves using screed pipes to ensure a perfectly level and consistent surface before the pavers are laid.

Goal: Create a stable and permeable base and a level setting bed for the patio pavers.

Tools and materials

  • Mini Skid Steer Toro Dingo TX1000 — Moving and spreading base material
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the stone base for stability
  • Screed Board — Leveling the setting bed material
  • Screed Pipes — Guiding the screed board to create a level setting bed
  • 3/4 Clean Stone — Providing a stable, permeable base layer
  • 3/8 Red Stone — Creating the setting bed for the pavers
