What happens here
After the initial compaction, polymeric sand is spread evenly over the entire patio surface. This specialized sand contains additives that bind together when activated by water, creating a strong, durable joint material that helps lock pavers in place, inhibits weed growth, and deters ants. The sand is swept into all the joints using a stiff-bristle push broom, ensuring complete filling. Excess sand is then removed from the paver surface using a leaf blower or soft brush. The patio is then compacted again (optional but recommended) to further settle the sand into the joints. Finally, the sand is activated by carefully misting the patio with water according to manufacturer directions, avoiding over-watering which can wash out the sand or cause staining.
Goal: Fill paver joints with polymeric sand to lock pavers and prevent weeds
Tools and materials
- Leaf Blower — Removing excess polymeric sand from the surface of the pavers before watering to prevent haze
- Plate Compactor — Performing a final compaction after sweeping in the polymeric sand to further settle it into the joints
- Push Broom — Sweeping polymeric sand into all the paver joints
- Polymeric Sand Unspecified — Filling and stabilizing paver joints, inhibiting weed growth, and preventing insect infestation
