back behind me is a tasting area there's a tasting area back here where you can try all the different kinds of apples and taste the apples for the trees that you're going to purchase so the information provided to you about these apples is the taste the flavor and when they get ripe which is important because if you plant an apple orchard for your family or around the homestead you want to be able to pick apples for you know a couple months several months and you want to know what apples will keep for months and what apples need to be eaten right away and all that information is right here let's walk over and check out some of the different varieties apples so guys these are all the different varieties of apples Joseph don't know goldrush let's see here I see all these different apple varieties right here Liberty what we've also discovered are several varieties of rotten apples which are good for deer Joseph Apple Virginia Gold hmm I don't know about you guys with my mouth is water and these guys are packing it up here getting everything all packed up ready to end the day here so let's walk you over here and show you the trees these are the trees that were grafted from a root graft off of apple tree limbs and the way he does this is secret it's some sort of family secret but look back here behind me awesome stuff let's just poke around with the camera real quick here so guys this is a big big event people come from all over the East Coast and he has thousands of apple trees here for sale being that we're doing a little interview with him here in a little video it's kind of neat we get a little backstage access last year we couldn't go back here we came last year and it was before I had the YouTube channel or when I first got started and I thought man it would be neat to take some folks and show them this so let's go around a little bit more show you some motor stuff so guys in case you're wondering what your tree is gonna come like this is what it's gonna look like it's gonna be bear just can be a bear stick okay I'll take you over here and I'll show you how we dig the holes for the planting of the trees so folks over here they have an education area where they show you how to dig the hole and exactly how to plant the tree and when you receive your tree in the mail it'll have all that information with you but here's an example I'll take the camera down a little bit closer so it says when you're planting add 2 to 3 pounds of lime per tree no fertilizer this is the whole vanna show me what else we have Center is deeper than the sides okay guys and free planting and pruning guides inside the house guys it's nice and cozy in here lots of pictures like a picture book here all the different buildings this is the building we're in right now all these different buildings when they were going up pretty interesting all right guys so you can come in here and try all these different kind of apples here we will open this guy up and give them a shot toothpick Arkansas black Arkansas black check out the old building here it's so awesome come on through here I'm too tall I'm 6 foot 5 and I don't fit through most of these doors in this old house pretty neat little place though let's go back outside you want to know about apples let's go see apples this is the hard cider he's getting ready to get real all right you have to tell me what you think about this pretty good pretty good so this is why you're here guys this table of apples is why you're here the folks this is the apple tasting area you can go in and taste all sorts of varieties of apples and they sell every one of these trees here it's amazing look at how many apple varieties let's get down here closer look at all these varieties of apples oh thank you sir Arkansas black and one we liked earlier that's what we still like it pops I recommend that tree we'll show you all these varieties guys Gold Rush mmm Gold Rush mmm good guys we'll show you this then we're gonna get out to the orchard what got me a worm these are certified organic apples look at that organic worm right there I just ate them accidentally it's really good it feels like applesauce so folks check out this old cabin that's really neat too they've done a whole lot of really cool stuff this little open house thing like I said it's in December it's once a year I'm gonna leave links down below to their website to everything you need to know we're gonna go over here and see if we can get an interview with David he's the owner of the place we're gonna talk to him a little bit about how all this came about I know he's been doing this for years and years and maybe his father did it I don't know so we're gonna go talk to him see what he has to say no further drone up in the air and get a little bit of footage of this beautiful place guys we caught up with David David is the owner is that okay screw owner proprietor how long you been doing this David we've been growing apple trees for about 25 years and we've been our business has actually been an established business since the late 90s every year is different sometimes depending on the weather yeah I know that in terms of our business it's pretty much been the same for the last 10 years we've been doing open house for about the full 20 years just about the last 10 years has been about the same we're here the first three Saturdays in November okay and we're open to walk around the farm purchase apples purchase trees ask questions it's as much educational at times as it is you know a family event and basically it's the one three of the three times of the year that we have people can actually pick up trees on-site to the rest of the year the rest of the dormant season from the first November to the first of April we only ship treaties okay this is our one opportunity to reach out to the community had them in taste some of the apples and actually see up-close what we do here so guys will leave a link down below to his website if you want to check out any of the trees I think how many varieties of trees do you sell online we grow about 500 varieties of trees here or post or heirloom southern some are modern they work well here okay and on any given year we're probably selling between 80 and 100 different varieties in our inventory nice Wow it's amazing and guys you were down there with me a little bit earlier you can see all these different trees it's just a beautiful wonderful place this guy's got a green thumb I couldn't imagine we're busy he's busy I couldn't imagine having the knowledge this guy's got in his head about how to do all this grafting and work with all these trees it's just something that's really spectacular something that you can get online by paying for a good tree so David I heard that you have some apples that are descendants from George Washington's apples on Mount Vernon is that well some of the apples that we have here they're all a lot of them heirloom and some of them go back to George Washington's time period and Thomas Jefferson's and we have also the oldest named apple variety in America the Roxbury russet available if you would like to have apples that people in the 1700s may have had historically like George Washington or Thomas Jefferson we do sell the same varieties so explain to me what the apples in the grocery store are compared to these apples that you're getting here these heritage type apples that's a complicated question okay an apple in the grocery store is grown to be sold gotcha sometimes it has excellent flavor sometimes it's the the beauty of the Apple itself and sometimes it's it's storing ability because if you can't store the Apple you can't sell it so really in the grocery store there trying to hit all three at once and they don't want to overwhelm the customer with too many choices so they usually limit your choices and they've been stored for a long time we get specialized in apple trees that grow to specific climates because sometimes you can't grow some of the very best apples and some southern climates very best being the ones that are sold in the grocery store in terms of commercially but you can grow apples at your house that you can use for cooking purposes eating purposes that match your climate and where you're at and sometimes those trees grow throughout the entire United States and sometimes they're only unique to a certain place if you're looking for a good Apple guys and you're looking for the right apple tree this is the guy you need to talk to you so we're talking about heritage apples we're talking about apples that your forefathers ate our forefathers ate it's pretty interesting so David last question here if somebody orders an apple tree from you they can order any time of the year right yes what's the best time of the year to plant an apple tree that's dependent upon your climate okay so usually this is generically if you're south of the Maryland Pennsylvania line and from southern Ohio down towards southern Missouri you can easily plant in the fall from November till mid December before it gets very cold guys if the winter is not too cold warrior you possibly could plant all winter long being too cold is the ground should not freeze more than about five or six inches down and you could plant all winter long here where we're at we usually avoid planting in January when you might be the very coldest but we can plant all winter long guys if you're north of that line you probably should really plant in the spring and so we can ship trees from any March or early April to wherever you're at and we also store them in a facility a cold storage facility so that they stay dormant until they're shipped to places like Michigan or Illinois or New York nice so are there any restrictions in our nation here I know you probably can't ship them overseas or to Canada is that right I only have the proper permits to shift within the United States of America so if you're in the United States and I have that even even to California okay I had the proper permits to ship to California and every other state so even you California's can get these trees guys and I know there are a lot of restrictions out there in California with agriculture so it's good to know anywhere in the continental United States grow you can get a tree from this guy well David I want to thank you for the you and he's got a handful of yummy looking apples what kind of apples you got there these are Yeats apples it's the middle of November and several these are still hanging on the trees here in North Carolina nice you might have to try eights Apple real quick mmm pretty good sweet moisés so guys if you're planting apple trees just for your family or planting apple trees for your deer if you're planting apple trees to make your farm a more beautiful place all right here's a guy to contact put a link down there all right so folks how often do
