What happens here
After the base is prepared, the laying of pavers begins. The video shows workers on their knees, carefully placing pavers by hand in various patterns such as herringbone, rectangular, square, and even designs mimicking wood planks. Before laying, a thin layer of bedding sand is typically spread over the compacted sub-base. Pavers are then placed directly onto this sand, ensuring tight joints and following the chosen pattern. Some areas also feature paver edgers or restraints along the perimeter to hold the pavers firmly in place and prevent shifting, especially for complex designs or high-traffic areas. Pavers may need to be cut to fit edges and around obstacles, which is typically done with a wet saw to achieve clean, precise cuts.
Goal: Lay various paver types in decorative and functional patterns.
Tools and materials
- Knee Pads — Protecting knees during extensive kneeling for paver placement
- Paver Edgers/Restraints — Securing the perimeter of the paver installation to prevent lateral movement
- Pavers
- Rubber Mallet — Tapping pavers into place and ensuring levelness without damaging them
- String Line — Establishing straight lines and consistent alignment for paver courses
- Wet Saw — Precisely cutting pavers to fit edges, curves, and intricate patterns
- Bedding Sand — Creating a level and flexible bedding layer for pavers
