What happens here
This project guides viewers through the complete process of revitalizing a patchy, unhealthy lawn into a lush, green one. It involves several key steps: dethatching to remove dead grass, aerating to decompact soil and improve nutrient absorption, overseeding to fill in thin areas, applying nitrogen-rich fertilizer to promote leaf growth and chlorophyll production, and finally, maintaining the lawn with proper mowing and watering techniques.

(7,437 characters)hey guys alex here from mr build it and today we're going to go into our backyard here's our current lawn we're going to take this poor excuse for our lawn and wait did you really think i was going to blow the big reveal now no we got a lot of work to do let's get to it so one of the first things we're gonna notice here is that there's a lot of dead grass behind in between all the nice green grass uh we're gonna use a dethatcher and what that's gonna do is it takes these little spikes and starts ripping out all the dead grass that's there allowing for water air nutrients to actually penetrate through so when i say detaching first [Music] look at all that dead grass that we just pulled out here's a different side of the yard here as you can see the dethatching brought some soil forward which is good because now the dead grass is gone and so all the rain nutrients can actually penetrate through uh i decided to mow later after detaching so that the mower can help you pick up some of this stuff some people might argue depending how tall your grass is but this is just fine [Music] so that is a full wheelbarrow of all the detached dead grass just from the backyard folks it's day two of operation make grass green again this is an aerator aerator does two things it punctures a hole into the grass using this death killing machine spikes punctures the hole and takes the plug out it's about i don't know inch and a quarter inch deep it does two things by doing that number one it decompresses the lawn all the roots down below that are squeezing it and preventing it from getting nutrients and water and anything else it gets in a little oose a little chill pill a little zany then it does the second thing by taking the plug out it exposes the bottom soil so when we introduce chemicals or overseed or anything we want to do this is the time that actually goes below the grass into the heart and soul of this soil and uh we'll actually see the effects so rented this probably 40 bucks from tate's really thankful that i can do something like that that way i don't have to buy one fire this up and start plugging away [Music] so but first let's thank the sponsors of today's video kamikoto japanese steel knives kamikoda makes great japanese steel kitchen knives using traditional techniques from japan they build on a legacy of over 800 years of japanese technology and expertise in creating the steel to make knives that have been meticulously handcrafted from using traditional techniques that date back to the ido period of japan that's really fun and fascinating but will be even more fun is a slice test [Music] the kamikoda japanese steel knives come in a heavy duty ash wood box which make it a great present each knife is individually inspected and comes with a lifetime guarantee the kamikoze japanese steel knives are so incredible that they're also used by michelin star chefs all over the world kemikoto has several special offers going on right now and is offering an additional 50 off viewers of my channel by using the promo code build it at checkout and that's on top of the special offers they're going on right now so here's what you're going to head over to kamikoto.com forward slash build it to get your knife set and help support this channel now let's get back into this video all right up next is the overseeding after we dethatched it it exposed a lot of thinness and balding of the grass kind of like us in our 20s we had a luscious thick beautiful mane of a hair and now we're in our mid-30s after three kids and all that stuff and uh we look like a wet cat out of the shower anyway let's proceed with this overseeding this is a rapid setting grass got at my local home depot it's nothing special just a generic stuff they have there this will allow for it to over spread the entire area into the aerated holes and into the dethatched area bring this grass nice and thick like we were in our 20s using a spreader here set on the right dial here i think it's number six based off of the spreader and uh let's get going zoom zoom [Music] two weeks later alright so let's recap we mowed the lawn we dethatched it we aerated it we overseeded it what else did we do we did a lot of stuff i let the lawn breathe and kind of relax take an usa moment and decompress for about two weeks luckily we got a little bit of rain too now on to the next step up next we got to introduce some nitrogen to our lawn now what does nitrogen do nitrogen promotes healthy leaf growth and by encouraging that healthy leaf growth it creates a chemical called chlorophyll not chloroform that's you can go to jail for that and what chlorophyll is is it's a vital key to photosynthesis the way the lawn and the plants absorb uh nutrition through carbon dioxide and sunlight now i'm no chemist remember that i'm also not a long guy i'm just a homeowner and i'm gonna show exactly how we're going to get the slime green now there's a lot of different chemicals you can use from scots and other stuff this is stuff that i can buy here in idaho this is the nitrogen composition that's in the back of the bag i'm going to set my spreader to the application start spreading this out and let it sit there for a little bit we're done now we gotta turn on the sprinklers so we can water the stuff a few moments later okay so we're currently on week three of this entire lawn transformation we had the nitrogen applied it's been about a week good healthy watering now one thing before we start mowing the lawn for a big final reveal to show you how we did going forward every eight weeks you have to apply a lawn fertilizer now there's a lot of different fertilizers out there but really what you're looking for is three combinations nitrogen which we already applied going forward it's going to help but also potash which is a form of water soluble potassium water soluble potassium and iron now what do all those things do is they help improve healthy root growth it protects it from any disease or parasite damage and it helps sustain and retain water so you don't have to overwater your lawn now we're going to set this aside and conquer this in the next couple of weeks but right now let's go mow the salon now one last thing is before we start mowing is grass length i used to think that the lower i cut it the less often i have to tinker with it but the reality is i'm hindering it from growing to be luscious and green two and a half to three inches that's what you want to work with and if you're happy this grass is gonna cut itself oh and by the way these are my ariat work pants they're stretchy that's the most important part i build i do construction and i do outdoor stuff link in the description go check them out you'll like them
