5 HOUR Garage Makeover. Painting a Garage Part 1

this christy idaho painter here on paint live tv today we're going to be painting a garage we're going to be spraying the garage right here and we're going to be spraying it with the product we've never tried before it's wall pro from rotter paint we'll let you know at the end of this video what we think about that product but this is a garage kind of a big garage vaulted ceilings but if you [Applause] [Music] all right so here it is the garage we've already started the masking process as we go we're going to give you some tips and tricks masking and spraying is always going to be significantly faster where there are some things we're just going to hand cut around with a um four inch roller and a three inch brush because it's a little bit faster to cut around some of the metal work on the garage hinges and springs customer wanted the metal work coming down that suspends the garage door open sprayed the same color as the rest of the garage the metal work those small things will just be sprayed with the 208 tip i'm going to give you some tips and tricks spraying i'm going to be using a 5 17 hea tip from titan so high efficiency airless tip it's going to give nice good feathered edges this is an ideal job where you'd want to use a high efficiency airless tip and aj tip from titan so stay tuned for that we're going to be giving you some tips and tricks so let's get on with the masking to show you what's going on here [Music] foreign [Music] all right so i'm masking right along here uh the overhead springs the garage door and stuff and this kind of an area we're gonna spray around a lot of this it's a lot easier to spray around some of it but when it comes to the hardware right here that's mounted the customer wants you know the hardware to not be painted so it's a little bit easier i'm masking just to keep any overspray off you know if i get a little bit careless with this sprayer but typically i'm going to spray around this stuff and stay away from it and then we're going to hand cut it in but for the most part where the entire garage will be you'll spray there'll be just a few little things when it comes to your hand cutting in with a four inch roller and a brush and that's typically around these brackets and hardware just would take a lot longer to mask around that and try to mask this off versus just cutting it in with a brush and a roller but even though i'm cutting it in i'm still just going to throw some masking along the edge and not be very particular about it but just to protect the door and hardware [Applause] crayon with a titan 840 sprayer gonna be using a heat tip which is a low pressure tip it's going to run around 800 to 1000 psi it's a really good um time to use something like that we've got a lot of space we don't want any hard edges we want nice feathered edges spraying in here don't want to use a lot of pressure treat a lot of dust and overspray [Music] so a lot of times when i'm spraying a garage what i would typically do is i'd mask a line just like this i would spray this hardware to match this wall but the customer specifically stated they wanted the hardware to you know stay the metal color and not be painted so that's what it's going to look like i'm just going to spray the middle down here just come in and hand cut this in i might take and you'll spray up against here real real quick but you know this is wood right here so we'll probably just leave that wood the wood color just good to really clarify you know this with the customer what they want with the hardware right here once again the brackets that suspend the garage door he wanted that to be the same color as the walls being sprayed but we obviously don't want you know the rail right here that the garage door runs on sprayed he didn't want that to be sprayed or painted at all like using one inch tape on my masker and then to tack down we're using inch and a half tape around the the floor just ran inch and a half taper on the floor and then we're tacking paper to that and we're going to use cardboard shields along with our paper so it is winter time here in boise which poses a few challenges when it comes to painting a garage because the garages typically are not heated this garage is not heated but it's fairly warm inside we did bring some heaters with us and we're heating the garage up so i'm masking this hardware off we're going to be spraying around it so i'm going to mask it up just like this i don't want any over spray falling on top of this but i'm going to hand actually hand cut around this hardware so i don't want to worry about masking it perfectly but i'll spray around it as close as i comfortably can get around it without getting over spray on it so our tape of choice this is frogtape's production tape this is their production grade tape it's what we like to use for doing all of our production stuff sticks better than any production tape i've ever used i'm dropping paper over the top this is the top of the garage door we don't want anything you'll leak in out the other side there's brand new garage doors so i'm going to be spraying across here and not going to get any overspray over the top just dropping some paper over the top of these rails too as we're spraying the ceilings we don't want any overspray falling we're masking right along it's going to take us about another 30 minutes to get the masking done there's only a few things in this garage that we got to cover with plastic one of the nice things about this garage we don't have to cover all the floors with drop gloss because they're going to be grinding this floor and doing an epoxy so the floors already got the drywallers came in here did a lot of taping and texturing didn't cover anything and there's tape and texture mud all over the floor but we're not gonna have to worry about any um dust or fallout and stuff because the floors are gonna be ground and then epoxied after we're done the stem walls going around we're gonna be putting on an agency stain on those stem walls to match the epoxy there's no reason to run an expensive proxy up on those walls but the customer wants it to match the epoxy floor so we're going to be running h c stain upon that so this is where the customer wants this to be match the rest of the walls and stuff so i'm just masking this off so this bar can get painted and i'm just going to all switch tips i'll switch out to a 208 to spray this bar that way it'll go fast and easy you can if you don't if you're concerned about overspray getting too much overspray around that bar you know we can get somebody to just run a four inch you know roller on this part of it thing i'm concerned about is all the holes in this if you run a roller on that you might get a lot of drips and stuff so it's just take a cardboard shield and just spray it with a cardboard shield so we did have a wood support beam right here customer did not want that painted just quickly wrapped a piece of nine inch paper around that and then drop plastic over that to cover this any overspray dust fallout just to protect that so it doesn't get you know anything on it all right i'm masking a window right here and we're going to be caulking same day that we spray this thing so um one really good tip is tower makes a caulking that you can put on and you can spray immediately and you can even spray it with flat paints and it won't crack so if the product is called accelerator so you can this with accelerator spray it pull it if you're going to be brushing and rolling you can actually brush or roll over the accelerator caulking within 30 minutes so it's an awesome product if you want to paint over your caulking immediately but there's kind of a gap in this window that the drywallers didn't fill we want that to look crisp and clean so we're going to mask mask it with frog tape and right before i spray it i'm going to it spray it and pull the masking while it's still wet but i ran just frog tape around the edges so i don't get any bleeding on my bronze window now i'm just going to drop plastic over it so sometimes i do like to you know run my masking you know first around the edges if i want to make sure i'm getting a perfectly straight line i know it does cost a little bit more you know and masking but we're just you know talking know pennies to um to you know ensure that you get a really really straight line so now i'm just going to fold my excess up underneath always pay particular attention to your corners that there's no leaks so i can see there's a leak right here in this corner make sure it's all tacked down a lot quicker to tape and ensure there's no leaks than to have to clean up overspray so we've got all the masking just about done we're getting ready to start doing our spraying we've got a few items here we can't take outside because it's raining it is winter time and so we're just dropping plastic over them once again we don't got to worry about the floors because we're going to be grinding it and doing an epoxy floor i've got my sprayer all set up ready to start spraying the paint going to be using a bedford 515 tip to do all the spraying inside here so we're just about ready i'll show you what it looks like i've got multiple extensions because this i'll get some vaulted ceilings in here i'll be just using ladder and extensions you can if you're comfortable using you know a spray pull you can spray this whole entire thing with a spray pole but um instead of breaking out the spray pole and setting it up i've got you know three extensions i can hook together and just use a ladder this is a pretty fast job uh this entire garage three car this three car garage a little bit deeper bays and vaulted ceilings i can spray this whole thing in probably about an hour so um we're going to start spraying and try to give you some tips and tips and tricks talking about spraying there just a second [Music] you
