What happens here

The project begins with significant site preparation, involving excavation and rough grading of the backyard area using a Bobcat skid-steer loader to move earth and prepare the ground for the new structures. Workers use shovels and rakes to fine-tune the grading. Following this, the substructure for the main deck level is constructed using pressure-treated lumber, including attaching a ledger board to the house and installing joists.

Goal: Prepare the ground and build the primary wooden framework for the deck.

Tools and materials

  • Bobcat Skid-Steer Loader Bobcat — Excavating and moving earth for site preparation
  • Circular Saw — Cutting lumber for the deck frame
  • Cordless Drill/Driver — Fastening lumber together
  • Level — Ensuring the deck frame is level
  • Measuring Tape — Accurate measurements for framing
  • Pressure-Treated Lumber — Constructing the deck's substructure (ledger board, joists, beams)
  • Rakes — Leveling and smoothing the ground
  • Shovels — Fine grading and moving smaller amounts of dirt
