With the shower tray removed, use a hammer and a sharp chisel to carefully remove the timber inside the marked lines on the studs and bottom plate. The goal is to create a 10mm deep recess. For the bottom plate, mark a 10mm line from the front edge and chisel back to that line. This ensures the shower tray can sit snugly into the framing. A hand saw can also be used to make vertical cuts into the studs to make chiseling easier.

Goal: Create a 10mm recess in the framing for the shower tray

  • Be careful when chiseling not to remove too much wood or damage the surrounding framing.

FAQs

The project is listed as 'beginner' difficulty, but 8 hours seems like a long time. What makes this project take so long, and is it truly suitable for a first-timer?

While the individual steps are straightforward, the 8-hour estimate accounts for careful measuring, precise framing, allowing sealant to cure, and meticulous waterproofing. Rushing these critical steps can lead to leaks, so taking your time to ensure everything is perfect makes it beginner-friendly by emphasizing accuracy over speed.

The required tools list several different drills. Do I need multiple drill/drivers, or will one standard cordless drill suffice for this project?

You only need one capable cordless drill/driver, such as the RYOBI ONE+ 18V Cordless 1/2 in. Drill/Driver, to complete this project. The multiple listings provide options for suitable tools. Ensure your chosen drill has enough power to drive screws into wood studs and backer board efficiently.

What is the most critical step to ensure the shower niche is completely waterproof and won't leak?

The most critical step is the meticulous waterproofing of all seams, especially where the niche meets the backer board. Apply a continuous bead of high-quality waterproof sealant like DAP Ultra Clear, and then properly embed waterproofing banding over all seams and fasteners. This creates a monolithic, leak-proof barrier essential for preventing water damage.

What if my existing wall studs aren't perfectly spaced for the pre-fabricated niche? Do I need to modify the framing?

Yes, you will likely need to modify your wall framing using 2x4 lumber to create a precise, sturdy opening for the niche. This often involves cutting existing studs and installing horizontal blocking to perfectly frame the niche's dimensions, ensuring a flush and stable installation. Accurate framing is crucial for long-term stability and waterproofing.

With the shower tray removed, you can now see a clear pencil line and the error we need to chisel out. Once again, I'm going to chisel back around about 10mm. We don't need this amount, but let's give ourselves a little bit of clearance so when we put our shower tray and we can cement it and put it in the right position. There's two different ways we can do this. One, we can use a nice sharp chisel here, dig into the wall, drive it down to the floor. The second way we can actually use a hand saw, cut it into the stud and then chisel it out. I'm now going to continue to chisel out my 10mm on every stud around the shower tray and I also need to take the 10mm out of the bottom plate. To do this, simply grab a pencil, set it up at the 10mm line and mark it along the bottom edge. You'll see I'm using a safety gut for this sole purpose. There's this timber as rough saw and you could get splinters in your fingers. Now we just need to clean the timber out, complete right around the shower tray and we're ready to install our shower tray. We've now completed chiseling out our recess and our bottom plate and
