Measure the total vertical distance (total rise) from the top of the lower floor (where the stairs begin) to the top of the upper floor (where the stairs end). For instance, if the measurement is 8 feet 9 inches (105 inches). Then, divide the total rise (in inches) by a desired individual riser height (e.g., 7 or 7.5 inches, common building code standards) to determine the number of risers. For example, 105 inches / 7.5 inches = 14 risers. Remember that the number of treads will be one less than the number of risers.
