Don't forget to include any landings in your final count if you plan on adding a tread there, too. Getting this number right from the start ensures your project goes off without a hitch.

10 minutesUsing a tape measure, find the depth of your stair. This is the distance from the very front edge (often called the 'nosing') straight back to the vertical board at the back of the step (the 'riser'). Step 3: Measure Your Stair Width
10 minutesMeasure horizontally from the far left to the far right of the flat part of your stair. Keep the tape measure taut and straight for the most accurate reading. This overall width measurement is essential for helping you decide on the next step: planning your 'reveal'.
