Step 3 · Remove the Drain Flange

This is the step most people slow down on. Take it one move at a time — there’s no rush, and you can rewind the clip as many times as you need.

This can be the most challenging step. The drain flange in the bottom of the tub must be unscrewed counter-clockwise. The best tool for this is a drain key (also called a dumbbell wrench), which slots perfectly into the crosshairs of the drain. If you don't have a drain key, you can insert the handles of a sturdy pair of needle-nose pliers into the drain opening, spanning the crosshairs. Then, place the shaft of a large screwdriver between the plier handles and use it as a lever to turn the entire assembly counter-clockwise. This may require significant force.
