Step 2 · Frame the Opening
This is the step most people slow down on. Take it one move at a time — there’s no rush, and you can rewind the clip as many times as you need.
This step adds crucial rigidity. Measure the horizontal distance between the two vertical studs where the niche will be installed. Use a saw to cut two pieces of 2x4 lumber to this exact length; these will be your horizontal blocking. Position one block so its top edge aligns with your marked bottom cut line for the niche, and position the other block so its bottom edge aligns with your marked top cut line. Secure the blocks firmly by driving 3-inch wood screws through the vertical studs and into the ends of the blocks. The backer board and the niche flange will later be screwed into this solid wood framing.
