Step 1 · Preparation and Removal of Old Drain

This is the step most people slow down on. Take it one move at a time — there’s no rush, and you can rewind the clip as many times as you need.

Begin by clearing everything from under the sink to give yourself ample working space. Place a bucket directly underneath the P-trap to catch any residual water and debris that will spill out when you disassemble the old drain. Use channel-lock pliers to loosen the large slip nuts connecting the P-trap to the sink's tailpiece and the wall's trap arm. These nuts may be tight, so apply firm, steady pressure. Once loosened, you should be able to unscrew them by hand. Carefully wiggle the P-trap free and empty its contents into the bucket. Next, unscrew the large mounting nut holding the drain body to the underside of the sink. You may need the pliers for this as well. If you have a pop-up drain, disconnect the pivot rod from the lift strap before fully removing the drain body.
