What happens here

A crucial warning is provided regarding soil compaction. If the foundation area of a patio is excavated and then subsequently freezes before proper compaction, attempting to compact the frozen soil will be ineffective. Frozen soil will not compact properly, giving a 'false sense of confidence' that the job is done. When the ground eventually thaws, this improperly compacted soil will settle, causing the entire patio to sink or shift. Therefore, soil compaction must strictly be carried out in non-freezing conditions.

Goal: Ensure underlying soil is compacted in non-frozen conditions.
