Why does this happen to this sawmill engine?
What happens here
The presenter drips a small amount of the engine's oil (suspected to be contaminated) onto one side of the metal trowel. He then drips a small amount of fresh, clean motor oil onto the other side of the trowel. Using a long-stemmed lighter, he applies a flame to the fresh motor oil, observing that it does not ignite. He then applies the flame to the engine oil, which quickly ignites and burns.
Goal: Test flammability of engine oil and fresh motor oil
Tools and materials
- Lighter — Applying flame to the oil samples
- Metal Trowel with oil drops — Holding the oil samples during the flame test
- Engine Oil — Flammability test, Fresh Motor Oil Unknown used for Flammability test (control)
