What happens here

To begin, a homemade compass is constructed. This typically involves a sturdy wooden beam. A pencil is securely attached to one end of the beam, often using a small clamp or tape. The other end of the beam is then affixed to a pivot point. In this video, a custom-made metal disc with a central anchor point (possibly a screw or pin) serves as the pivot, ensuring a stable and fixed center for rotation. The worker then carefully positions this pivot point on the patio surface, outside the area to be curved, and rotates the wooden beam. As the beam rotates, the attached pencil draws a precise, smooth curved line across the surface of the pre-laid patio pavers. This marked line will serve as the exact guide for subsequent cutting, defining the new custom edge of the patio.

Goal: Accurately delineate the desired curved edge on the patio pavers.

Tools and materials

  • Clamp — To securely attach the pencil to the wooden beam, preventing it from slipping during marking
  • Pencil — To draw the curved line onto the pavers
  • Pivot Point Assembly
  • Wooden Beam — Serving as the rigid arm for the homemade compass to maintain a consistent radius
