What to look for 1 Week after Installing a Package of Honey Bees....pastured poultry talk

What happens here

After the beehive inspections are complete, the beekeeper emphasizes proper tool management. He advises saving used queen cages, as they can be repurposed as temporary entrance reducers if a hive needs a very small opening for defense against robbing. For the smoker, which will still contain smoldering material, the recommendation is to place it in a safe, non-flammable area like a gravel driveway and pump it until the fuel (e.g., burlap) burns out completely. This prevents accidental fires and ensures the smoker is ready for its next use. Keeping the bee yard tidy is also stressed as a good practice to avoid attracting pests or creating hazards.

Goal: The beekeeper provides practical advice on what to do with used queen cages and how to safely extinguish a smoker after use.

tell you before we go what I do with my queen cages. Hang on to these guys because sometimes you may need an entrance reducer. You may need to make your entrance really, really small. And these things work great to sit right in the front of your entrance reducer if you need to make it even smaller. And the next thing I want to tell you is how to get rid or what to do with all the leftover stuff in your smoker. And basically, I just take it and I set it in a safe place out in the driveway or in the gravel. And I pump it until it gets to flaming up good. And I just let the burlap that I use in here go ahead and burn completely out. And you can see that thing shoots up a big old flame. So that's what we do, guys. That's how we check our bees for the first time after we've introduced them into the new hive. That's it for the farm vlog today. I thank you for watching. Come back and see me.
