We Bought a Vacant 70s Compound...Now We Have To Fix it! (Shop Progress and Logan's Office)

What happens here

Logan installs decorative picture frame molding on the freshly painted walls. She meticulously measures and cuts each piece of molding, using a makeshift marking technique with her fingernail and then cutting with special molding cutters. The pieces are then secured to the wall using liquid nails and finishing nails, with a hammer to tap them in. She then caulks the edges for a seamless finish.

Goal: Add decorative trim to create paneling effect

Tools and materials

  • Caulk Gun — Applying caulk to fill gaps
  • Hammer — Tapping in finishing nails
  • Molding Cutters — Cutting decorative molding strips
  • Nail Punch — Setting finishing nails below the surface
  • Tape Measure — Measuring molding lengths
  • Caulk — Sealing gaps along molding edges
  • Decorative Molding Strips — Creating the paneling effect on walls
  • Finishing Nails — Further securing molding
  • Liquid Nails — Securing molding to the wall

>> Oh, yeah. That's right. [laughter] >> I started priming the walls in here. I'm also putting together this cabinet or finishing putting it together. I got new trim for it, so I've been cutting it out and placing it in. So, that one's mocked up. And I kind of figured I haven't been filming myself, and I should be. I've been looking everywhere for my marker, and it [clears throat] was in my pocket. That looks so much better than what was there. Oh my gosh, I'm so happy with that. Look behind you. >> Doesn't that molding look good? >> Yeah. >> That trim like looks so much better than like that 2x4 bull was on there. Yeah, it does. What? >> You going to open that? I left the instructions and stuff with it. >> Okay, it works just fine. >> Oh, are you serious? >> What did you do? >> How did you turn it on? >> I put the batteries in the right way and poked the button. >> Which button did you poke? >> Any of them. They They all do something. Yeah. >> What the >> You just didn't put the batteries in right. >> I put them in three different ways. >> Did you put them in the way that it says to on here? >> Yes. And it didn't do anything. Is it possible you did it opposite the way it said to? >> No, I tried opposite both ways. >> Cuz when I opened it, they were all facing the same direction. >> Yeah, I know. Cuz that was the last effort. [laughter] >> So yesterday, I roughly outlined where I'm going to put my picture frame molding. And I'm not too far off, which I'm pretty impressed with cuz I didn't have a laser level. And [clears throat] I was just kind of eyeballing with um the frame of the window. And I [clears throat] have a [laughter] I have a piece of a side skirt from Mitchell's race car that's 5 1/2 in. And I was using that as my measurement and level tool to make the straight lines. And that is what I ended up with. Yesterday, I didn't quite finish measuring each of these boxes to make sure they're the exact same size. So, right now, I'm going through making sure that they are 32 across from inside to inside. And then using the laser level to [clears throat] line up the tape lines to make sure that they're straight. And then I can start cutting some of that trim. So, let's get to it. Now I have to measure out a square the exact same size as the one on the left side of the window to the right side of the window. Finishing up…
