What happens here

This video provides a comprehensive guide on replacing the pilot assembly, which includes the thermocouple, in a gas water heater. It covers everything from safety precautions and identifying the correct replacement part to disassembly, reassembly, and testing for gas leaks. The specific water heater model (AO Smith ProMax mid-2000s) requires replacing the entire pilot assembly rather than just the thermocouple, a key distinction highlighted in the video.

quick disclaimer if you're not comfortable with working with natural gas don't do this job call a plumber they will happily hook you up you might spend a little money but it's worth the peace of mind hey folks that fix it guy here and today we're gonna be working on a water heater all right i'm over to friend's house the water heater it works but every time the fire goes out from heating the tank it dies pilot leg doesn't stay lit bad thermal couple so come along let's get to fixing [Applause] so i actually ran to lowe's real quick bad thermal couple i thought well maybe i could get lucky universal i didn't actually know what they had so what we're looking at here is the ao smith pro max um mid 2000's right so that means that i can't just swap this thermal couple and i'll show you what i'm talking about so this is going back to the store and i'm gonna show you what we're doing all right so first thing we're going to do is we're going to come over to here we already know what the issue is so we're going to shut the gas off all right we'll turn the valve over to off make sure that's good and hooked up next we're going to get down here with this cover plate we're just going to go ahead and remove that this whole little plate right here is going to have to come out so if you ever need to know what you're looking for look around for this sheet right here it's going to actually give you the model number it's going to give you the serial number this information right here will let you know you can plug this into the ao smith or any other manufacturer's website and it's actually going to give you a parts breakdown it's going to give you troubleshooting tips it's going to give you all kinds of stuff this information right here is what you're going to need really to work on this okay okay so we come down to this plate and you can see this wire actually right here is the thermal couple well the problem is is that you can see this little kind of plug right here there's no way to actually pull the thermal couple out or pull this nut right here through that little hole where it's just the wire they've kind of made it in this particular model where you actually have to replace the whole pilot assembly you have your gas turned off here you want to come to right here there's going to be this little connection right here just take that out sorry for the wobbly camera fixing to get a lot more stable here once i set the thing down not a lot of space in this pantry go to right here you want to just take a this actually will take a 3 8 nut driver if you have one if not adjustable jaw and just lefty loosey all right pop that bad boy off there okay so we're gonna have to take the gas tube off because we want to be able to put this gasket right here on okay there's no way to just hook that up unfortunately i don't want to cut it or rip it so it's just easy it's not going to take too much longer that's going to pop off this is actually going to take the entire burner assembly out just want to grab a screwdriver so we'll get this whole little piece right here popped off you want to grab this tube right here you just want to pull it down and it'll pull out of your way once you do that this whole thing is freed up a little bit right so now you're able to move this around with a little flexibility just so then once you get this gasket and everything kind of moved out of your way you've got this tube moving you just kind of want to lift up a little bit and you'll be able to pull the whole thing out okay and now you've got that out like that i'll just grab the old box got a little bit of burn off from the tank right there look inside here just see see how everything looks all right so it doesn't look bad and there's a little bit of rust but there's always going to be a little bit of sediment not too much and we can get a little vacuum and try to clean that out of there okay so we want to get this pilot assembly off right here and you're gonna see a couple of screws you might notice too this is actually a milwaukee 11-1 screwdriver a funny story i took that screwdriver out of my bag to shoot a video on letting you guys know that i was giving away the channel lock 611 and i hit i didn't have it so boom had to borrow a screwdriver for my friend so we got those two screws out it's going to take two because it actually connects to the pilot assembly in two different places get that out of there just pop that off and so this whole thing is gonna separate right that's gonna separate what i want to do is actually just get this whole little piece off of here and what's going to happen now is we're just going to take this and we're going to push this little button right there through there look and we just feed everything out and that's what we got dude now that's out next what we're gonna do is this right here we're just gonna we're just gonna take this we're gonna feed the gasket through the hole real quick all right just feed that right on through there it'll feed no problem and this whole little piece is just going to slide off of here for you then you're able to just take pop your new one on you can see it's got a little bit of a slit there to make it go through bigger stuff we'll pop that on right through there and bam we're back in the biz here okay and so now you're going to take this make sure that you go in from the back side you don't want to go in this way you want to go in from the back side and then you feed this little gasket right here back through and it'll end up setting right like that again okay makes this real easy like so when you look this up you're actually going to notice that this pilot assembly is for a couple different manufacturers around this time frame okay so you want to take this you want to get it unwound right because it was straight going in you want it to be just kind of straight going out wind it out so then we're just going to go right back through that hole you're going to go from the back of this thing once again and you want to feed your pilot tube your igniter wire all that stuff up through here and then this right here is just going to pop right back in place right you can grab it and just kind of tug it around twist it around a little bit and it'll be right back in place there so you'll be able to tell when it's the whole way around it won't be misshaped you can see it back there looking pretty good and then this whole little assembly right here will just slide right through that and it's actually just going to fit right like that back in place okay so now that we've got this pretty much where we want it you're gonna see a couple tabs you see like this you gotta gotta get in this way you see this little tab right down here well there's also a little tab right here okay and then there's squares one right here and one right here on the pilot assembly well if you get those tabs to line up that means your holes are going to line up so as long as you have this bottom part of the burner assembly underneath that plate and then this one on the and then this one right here on the outer edge you're going to be good to go you can see that screw holes lined up just get the top one in first i tend to find that to be easy screw that in place screw it down tight and bam you were hooked up you don't need to touch this you don't need to adjust it okay so let's get in here and try to just clean this out all right okay so i am literally in a small little pantry i am fixing to lay down to have to show you guys how this goes together i mean like literally there's wall right there not much space so what we're trying to do is we're actually trying to insert so this part of this assembly this round tube we're actually trying to put inside that little j-shaped piece right there so let's get that hooked up through there not a lot of space here once we get this back there we'll be all right you want this to be setting inside the j i know it's setting cockeyed like you can see that right but whenever we go to do this we turn it up it's just going to turn up perfectly it's going to sit right in place right where it needs to okay so and we're going to focus on this a little bit all right so so with that being in there we're going to focus on this plate now you want to get this plate kind of hooked up and put in there you want to get it on that back side and then it's just going to pop right on and slide right where it needs to the sealer you got the fabric seal around it put where you want you've got that thing in the holes i just want to loosely tighten this up okay i don't want this to really move anymore i can do a little micro adjustments here going side to side but i want to make sure that for the most part it's where it is so if we roll up top here this is kind of out of place you kind of push it down and it'll kind of rest up and pop up in there a little bit and then we'll get these tightened down the rest of the way get that nice and secure remember 3 8 nut driver hook us right up here so now the first one we'll do is we'll just go right here okay so once you get the center one tightened you're going to want to go ahead and tighten these up you can see that i actually put a couple loops in them because these are way longer than the other ones but that's okay this is totally gonna be fine right we just we're gonna make this functional so that's good to go these are tightened up everything is good we'll test the gas here in just a second we gotta test for leaks let's hook up the ignition everything else is longer except for this wire exact size you just take this pop that in there put the cover over it that's good to rock and roll okay so we'll go ahead we'll turn the gas back on get this at the pilot light okay so you want to go from the off position to pilot you want to push down and you want to click the igniter while holding this down you want to make sure you're holding it down the whole time until it lights and then you want to wait about 30 seconds to look for the flame you're gonna look down here you can see that the pilot light is lit and it's actually staying lit okay so now you want to take this you want to switch from pilot to on and then you want to take your dial and you want to turn it up i usually like to set it at b b is usually a pretty good hot for everybody and we hear it burning if you get in there you can see now we've got the burner going okay so then we just want to test for a leak right so i got some soapy water really soapy water in here and you just want to spray it just give those fittings a couple sprays make sure there's no leaks right that's what we're looking for and why not since we're here spray these fittings as well all right just check for a gas leak you don't want none of that okay well all that looks good i don't see any big bubbles nothing coming out we're good to go there so this is definitely still going but if we turn it down it turns off turn it back up i think we're good to rock and roll here take this cover slap it back on there all right folks there it is it really can be easy and difficult all at the same time some of it's a little harder than other parts of it it might not go back together for you super easy you might have to fiddle with a little bit don't get discouraged it really is a pretty easy job i really hope this video helped if you guys could please subscribe to the channel click the like button we'd love to have you keep coming back thank you very much and we'll see you again real soon
