What happens here

With the trenches dug and conduit routes established, carefully lay the electrical conduit into the trenches. Ensure all sections of conduit are properly joined using appropriate fittings and electrical glue/primer to create a continuous, watertight system. Once the conduit is laid, use a fish tape to pull the correct gauge and type of electrical wire through the entire conduit system. For outdoor burial in conduit, THHN/THWN individual wires are commonly used. Alternatively, if direct burial is permitted by local code and the conduit is protective, UF-B (Underground Feeder with Ground) cable might be used, although pulling individual wires through conduit is generally preferred for future maintenance. Leave sufficient wire length at each end (outlet boxes and termination points) for making connections.

Goal: Install conduit in trenches and pull electrical wires through the system.

Tools and materials

  • Conduit Glue and Primer — Creating strong, watertight seals between conduit sections and fittings
  • Electrical Conduit — Encasing and protecting the electrical wires
  • Electrical Wire — Carrying electrical current to the outlets and detached structure
  • Fish Tape — Pulling wires through the conduit
  • Pliers — Bending and manipulating wires
  • Wire Strippers — Stripping insulation from wires for connections
  • Wire Lubricant — Facilitating wire pulling through conduit
