upgrade your life to pavers. #paverpatio #hardscape

What happens here

After the deck is removed, begin preparing the site for the new ground-level paver patio. This involves excavating the area to a depth of approximately 8-10 inches to accommodate the compacted gravel base and bedding sand, ensuring a proper slope for drainage (1/4 inch per foot) away from the house. Install a layer of compacted gravel (4-6 inches thick), followed by a 1-inch layer of bedding sand. Precisely lay the chosen pavers, leaving space for the conceptual grill and dining table. Secure the perimeter of the paver patio with edge restraints and then sweep jointing sand into the paver gaps, compacting and wetting it to lock the pavers in place.

Goal: Create the main ground-level outdoor living space.

Tools and materials

  • Broom — Sweeping jointing sand into paver gaps
  • Hearing Protection — Protecting ears when operating loud machinery like a plate compactor
  • Level — Checking the slope and flatness of the base and pavers
  • Paver Cutter/Saw — Cutting pavers to fit edges or around obstacles
  • Pickaxe — Breaking up compacted soil or small rocks during excavation
  • Plate Compactor — Compacting the gravel base, bedding sand, and pavers
  • Rubber Mallet — Adjusting individual pavers into place
  • Safety Glasses — Protecting eyes during cutting and compaction
  • Shovel — Excavating and spreading base materials
  • String Line — Establishing straight lines and consistent grades for excavation and paver laying
  • Bedding Sand — Creating a level setting bed for pavers
  • Edge Restraints — Securing the paver perimeter and preventing spreading
  • Gravel — Providing a stable, draining sub-base
  • Jointing Sand — Filling gaps between pavers to lock them in place and deter weeds/insects
  • Pavers Belgard — Creating the walking surface of the patio
