What happens here
The video highlights the use of 'geogrid', a black mesh material, which is laid horizontally between courses of retaining wall blocks. This geogrid extends backward from the wall into the soil mass behind it, getting rolled back into the 'base' (backfill area). As more stone or soil is backfilled and compacted on top of the geogrid, it effectively 'sandwiches' the layers, providing tensile strength to the soil. This reinforcement prevents the soil from pushing the wall out and helps hold back the earth more effectively.
Goal: Stabilize the backfill soil and reinforce the retaining wall structure.
Tools and materials
- Clean Drain Stone / Backfill Material — Layering over the geogrid for compaction and reinforcement
- Concrete Retaining Wall Blocks — To anchor the geogrid layers and form the wall face
- Geogrid — Reinforcing the soil behind the retaining wall to improve stability
- Plate Compactor Wacker Neuson — Compacting the backfill material in layers over the geogrid
- Utility Knife / Heavy-Duty Shears — Cutting geogrid to size
